Reflection On Classroom Observation Of Cavazos

Improved Essays
On November 11th, 2016, I had the opportunity to observe several class periods at Cavazos Middle School in Lubbock, Texas. The classroom assigned to me was an eighth grade social studies class led by Ms. Brown. The main focus of this observation was to gather information regarding professional organizations that teachers are eligible to join, and the pros and cons of them. Throughout my conversation with the Ms. Brown, I was able to understand the significance of joining a professional organization. I entered the school at 7:25 am through the back entrance. As soon as the doors opened, it was clear that this observation would be different from my last two. Students are required to remain in the gym until the release bell for class. The bell ringer resulted in a classroom discussion about the sixth and ninth amendment. After the bell ringer, students began working on an assignment in groups. Ms. Brown referred to this assignment as rotations. Students had a list of presidents in which they were to find out why they were significant. Each group of students had a textbook and an iPad to research information on each president. Ms. Brown mentioned to me that the first and fourth period are very different academic wise, which I found to be true. The fourth period seemed to be more advanced and consisted of fast learners. All four of the class periods that I observed did the same exact thing. Overall, I really enjoyed observing Ms. Brown and being in a different environment. She is definitely a teacher I would like to learn from more. As we were talking about students, teaching, and the school environment, the passion she has for teaching is clear. I also like that Ms. Brown was blunt and upfront about the significance of organizations she was a part of. I observed two elementary schools before Cavazos and I will say that I really enjoyed the middle school

The world of education as we know it is a place built on a foundation that is surrounded by enigmas and empty promises. It is for this reason that America has yet to find an effective solution that works for schools nationwide that is “progressive” as well as “consistent” in the field of education. The articles and the book that we have read so far in class have left me a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I think about how far we have come and how many steps we continue taking backwards. The issues surrounding education seem to share the same common factors of race, high expectations, and hidden agendas.…

My field observations took place at Renaissance Charter School at Central Palm. I honestly had a wonderful experience and I really enjoyed my time there. I was assigned to Ms. Pickholtz’s 1st grade class. When I first arrived to the charter school I was extremely nervous and a little anxious because just the thought of actually helping a teacher run a class seemed scary to me because I felt like I would do a horrible job at it. However, I was welcomed by both the teacher and the class…

In the pre-professional age, skills for teaching were acquired through practical apprenticeship, learned by watching others, and once an individual learned how to teach, the teacher was seen as mastering the profession (Hargreaves, 2000). Professionally, when a teacher was no longer working as an apprentice, feedback was eliminated and interactions with colleagues halted, leaving a teacher on their own (Hargreaves, 2000). Further learning, according to Hargreaves (2000), was acquired through trial-and-error within the confines of isolated classrooms. In the 1960s, the age of the autonomous professional, Hargreaves (2000) claims that individualism was a common characteristic of teaching, as teachers continued to teach in isolation, separated from their…
