Child observation Venue – Franciscan Community Center, 97th Broadway, New York.
Group – Babies and Toddlers Group run by Dr. Sandra Fell

The babies and toddlers group is a social wellness program that currently has a class of ten kids who meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00 pm.
During this time, each child is present with a caregiver (parent/guardians) who get together for play, socialization and different activities.
I reached the center at 9:55am and there were a few parents who had already arrived. I met with the group leader, Nour, and was given a corner to sit and observe the kids. I quietly sat down and continued observing. The kids were jumping and excited

Her motor skills were gross and fine. She had the ability to control the large group of muscles that help her in sitting, walking, transferring from one position to another and could manipulate the objects with her hand in order to eat, draw, play etc. Alyana’s mother takes her to the play area to play with other kids and toys placed on the floor. She picks up a block, feels it, looks at her mom for reinforcement and plays with it again. However, she quickly puts it back and gushes towards the sitting area with the table arrangement. She tries to pull the chair out and sort of plays with it.
Her mom is busy talking to other moms until she realizes that Alyana is not in the play area and sort of gets up to put her back in the play zone. Although, Alyana sits there for a few seconds but runs back to the sitting area. She walks around different tables and is interested in the arrangement. She hardly talked or made any sound but her face was filled with excitement and curiosity to see and feel the chair and its shape. Her mother tries to distract her and bring back to the play area so that she can play with other kids. However, this cycle repeats at least three times until a storage box filled with cars distracts Alyana. She sits down and pulls each car out and puts it aside until all of them are out. She picks up the storage box and stars exploring it. She looks at the

Her interaction with the group leaders and other classmates was very less but she did show signs of relationship development.

Summary –

Alyana’s developing curiosity towards shapes and objects was fascinating. Even though she was securely attached to her mother she managed to make her own decision and stay away from the crowd and do her own thing. Even though she was less of a socialite or attention seeker, she managed to explore the entire class. Her mother was very supportive about this characteristic.
I learnt interesting things about behavior and developmental characteristics form this child observation. Even though the development characteristics have a common ground among all the kids and they describe only certain kind of behavior, each and every kid portrays different forms of permutations and combinations that make them unique from the other. Alyana was one of them.

P.s. – Thank you so much for this opportunity Dr. Bodnar. It was a great learning
