Whenever I become friends with someone on Goodreads, I always click on someone’s DNF bookshelf first. (Which was one of the reasons why I have a DNF shelf on my Goodreads account because I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this). I like to see what books uninterested my friends so much that they were forced to put it down. In my several years of reading, there are only three books that I did not finish.

Those books are the following:

Love Letters to the Dead

An Abundance of Kathrines

Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

My meager list may be a bit surprising. I know that Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a favorite to many. But what made me set it down? Simple as this: I was in an AWFUL reading slump at the time. I’m actually super ashamed that I didn’t complete it. One of the worst things to do during a reading slump is to pick up a book with a complex world and that is exactly what I did. If I hadn’t read it at the time, I probably would have enjoyed it. The other two books I have different reasons for.

So, what makes a DNF book for me?

1.The Characters Characters are a major part of the story to me. Whenever I read a book, I try to take something from it. Sometimes it’s a certain quality I adapt into my personality or sometimes it’s a line that a character has said. When a book has an

I am currently (as of February 22, 2016) reading The Rose Society by Marie Lu. I absolutely adore Marie Lu and The Legend trilogy. Her writing style is quite different in The Young Elites trilogy, and it’s messing with my brain a bit. The plot is phenomenal and the world is really fascinating. I’m pushing through it, though. I refuse to let it be a DNF book. The character point above and the writing style coincide with each other. The writing style that works best with me is quirky. When the narrator is humorous, I can immerse myself in the book more. The slower writing style, the more likely that I will give up on the

The character in a story is the main foundation in any story, essay, or any other form of writing. These characters not only give the writing a purpose, but present the irony, symbols, and conflicts in the stories. Without the main character there would not be any sort of writing. The main character may also be dynamic, which means the change as the story goes on, or they may be flat, which meants that they don’t change. From the many stories we read in our class, I fell in love with the character Rochelle, from the story “The Bride” by author Christine Granados.…

Impact of Target Audience Target audience is definitely a marketing term, which focuses the writer to the bottom line, money. In order for writing to provide income, it must be desired by a specific group of people that are willing to pay for it. Kent Bridgeman states that writers need to “give away” their product in order to hook their target audience. Bridgeman also advised exceeding any genre or target audience’s expectation, this is of course the dream of every writer.…

Every individual who reads books all have a favourite character. Preferably a character that shares a certain type of relationship with the reader that makes them love them. Sometimes different aspects from a novel share the same type of qualities as the reader, and they makes connections to the character, they are relating themselves to the character. In the novel The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the most admirable character is Ralph because of his sense of authority, justice and civilization and as a result of these traits, his time on the island as a leader is miserable and…

The entire bedroom was enclosed in a blanket of darkness. I could hear my sisters, Lillian and Angela, breathing lightly as sleep came across them. I edged my way to the little bookcase next to my bed and my hand fumbled across it; I felt my horse figurines, a few hairclips, and a notebook, but I didn’t need those things now. Finally, my hand located my mini yellow flashlight I had earned at that year’s summer reading program. Grasping it tightly, I retreated to my pillow and reached underneath and pulled out…Extra Credit.…

Neil Gaiman sees reading being so important because he believes it’s a gateway drug to reading. Gaiman refers to it like that because he says The drive to know what happens next, to want to turn the page, the need to keep going, even if it’s hard, because someone’s in trouble and you have to know how it’s all going to end … that’s a very real drive. And it forces you to learn new words, to think new thoughts, to keep going. To discover that reading per se is pleasurable. Once you learn that, you’re on the road to reading everything.…

Anxiety that has to be overcame while in the writing process. Writing is something everyone is expected to know how to do, but writing an essay in some hours is far away from writing a novel within a few months.
