Forty feet in the air, standing in a bucket smaller than the span of my arms, the body harness with the lanyard attached to an anchorage point does nothing to quell my lifelong fear of heights. So with a white knuckle grip on the bucket, a steady hand on the hydraulic controls, and all the trust in the world in my harness, I swivel the boom left toward the tree’s canopy. I learn firsthand that applying too much pressure on the control causes the bucket to jerk.…

My brother was once accused of dealing drugs for wearing a Diamond Supply hoodie. The person who accused him seemed to be the kind of adult who would take a more professional approach than this. She seemed to be the kind of person to have an open mind, but I guess to her, my brother seemed to be the kind of kid that deals drugs, the kind of horrid person who spends his day at the skate park, who therefore must be dealing marijuana to his fellow skater friends. All because of his choice of clothing. Seeing my own brother being discriminated against because of his choice of hoodie really opened my eyes to a type of discrimination and stereotyping that I had previously been oblivious to.…

November 14, 2015. That was the day of Preliminaries for California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Championship and there I stood. All alone. In my own line, nervously waiting for the race to start as teams took their place to the right and left of me. I was born and raised in Iran, where the governmental structure and belief system is set up in a way that made my life different from other Iranians. Due to my religion, same as hundreds of thousands of other Baha’is in Iran, I wasn’t able to continue my education after high school. Although my grades have always been above class average, as I knew I would never be allowed to receive higher education, I never had the privilege to dream about my future profession. Navigating high school as a sophomore, after relocating from Maryland to Georgia, I was like an inexperienced pilot armed with only basic flying skills. I settled in with new teachers, made new friends, and aspired to ascend to great heights, yet I suffered a turbulence at the cusp of my junior year.
