Example Of A Sociological Analysis

I feel that class and social divisions do impact on the everyday opportunities of those around me. Financially it is obvious to see especially when you see pictures on social media of your people you know on holiday in exotic countries, indeed it is common to hear of someone every year who is off to Dubai or the Caribbean, an opportunity which would not be available to those in more working class neighbourhoods such as where my secondary school was located. In the ex-mining village in north Nottinghamshire of Rainworth it was very rare to see an individual who was not white. Moreover this meant that the students who came from this area were more susceptible to negative media portrayals of ethnic groups. For example I regularly see people sharing …show more content…
For example when canvassing for the conservative party my sister’s boyfriend was verbally abused by an ex miner, showing he still possessed this ill feeling. In comparison to this, residents of my villiage, of Ravenshead, were more open to the conservative party and when he was canvassing at the village shops, residents approached him to talk to him as the residents are more made up of middle class professionals and those who have retired .There also existed an opinion, at least on the part of those from Rainworth that, pupils from my village were ‘rich’ in comparison simply due to the location of where we lived, showing a class divide. One thing we found when conducting the field trip task was that social divisions were shown to be played out through taste. If we simply look at cheese availability between Asda and Waitrose, both of which were located in Oadby, we found that Waitrose regarded many of its cheeses, such as Brie and Edam, as something that should be in its ‘essentials’ range. However, in Asda, only a few were made as ‘smart price

Reading Task Chapter 2: Sociological Research Methods The second chapter of The Real World by Ferris and Stein distinguishes between the different research methods sociologists use and outline their advantages and disadvantages. Although the methods are also outlined in great detail, I feel that the thought of the benefits but especially downsides of the methods is of crucial importance in that chapter. Sociology, although sometimes looked upon more as a humanity than a science (which I personally feel is unjustified), is an academic field that uses the scientific method in order to gather and interpret data. Even though people tend to feel reduced and dehumanized by being labeled as ‘data points’ the study of societies is in many ways similar…

Class Structure in American Society According to Stanley Aronowitz, “class is deeply embedded in the recesses of our cultural and political unconsciousness.” This quote is particularly meaningful, because it is so true. Class determines almost everything we do weather we realize it our not. Class shapes who we are and where we would like to be as a person.…

Social class is something that many people in the United States tend to not think about. Yet, social class plays a substantial role in the everyday life of the citizens of the United States. The contrast of social class can be seen in the schools throughout the country. Looking at the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for Tehachapi High School (THS), a school I attended, we can see disimilarities due to social class. To being with, Tehachapi High School had a majority white population.…

Class has been referred to as an 'unspeakable identity ' that is rarely discussed, perhaps because of it 's link with inequalities where a small amount of people hold superior positions within society. This essay will show various types of evidence that allow social scientists to know about the connections between class and place, first through Engels ' study of Manchester, then Booth 's survey and map of London and thirdly through quantitative data obtained through research. One way social scientists know about the connection between class and where people live is through evidence such as studies. Upon his study of industrial Manchester, Friedrich Engels referred to Manchester as a divided city, and through his work, we can see what he meant…

I have read about how socioeconomic statuses affect the students in the classroom, but actually experiencing it in the classroom made me realize how real the problem can be. As I interacted with the students, it became quite obvious which students were of the lower socioeconomic status (LES). In discussions, students gave lots of information about themselves and their family lifestyle. Many students discussed how their families lack income (could not afford school supplies, snacks etc.), lack time (not getting home early enough to do homework because they are at some sort of daycare facility), lack food choices (it is quicker and cheaper to pick up candy for snacks at the gas station), lack of family (a few of the students were in foster care), etc. Many of those students realized that school is a very important part of their lifestyle (needing to learn to get a better job, etc.), but for most of them it is a struggle to be academically successful.…

When asking yourself “What matters more, Social class or Race?” there are multiple concepts that must be addressed in order to approach this complex question. These are more than just words. They are how an individual identifies themselves. An individual experiences life differently depending on whether one identifies as ethnically ‘Black’ or ‘White’. (Kirkham, 2015)…

I think this is one of the most pressing aspects that people misjudge. A social class is defined as a group of people who share the same economic positions, but people make it much more complex than that. People look at the kind of job a person has or the color of their skin and place them in a class that they don’t necessarily belong to. In the reading “As American as Apple Pie: Poverty and Welfare,” it was brought to my attention that a majority of people will fall under the poverty line at some time in their life. Poverty has no color, yet at the same time people see black people in poverty and think it typical due to laziness or they are delinquent and can’t follow the law.…

Multiple class issues are still very common in society. In the Victorian era of England, the class issues were caused by the unequal distribution of resources. The lower-class members of the society always received low wages. They were put down and treated like slaves, while the wealthy people continued to find more and more resources, which is important in maintaining social status (Ellmann pg. 54). Wilde demonstrates that the problem of social economic differences has been a huge part…

Janny Scott and David Leonhardt’s article “Shadowy Lines That Still Divide” tells us society has changed a lot from decades ago and class differences are getting blurry rapidly. It is possible and credible to change our positions and futures regardless of what kind of class we are. Class difference is existing, but it is not significant and necessary for people to success. Our future is determined by ourselves.…

To many thinking sociologically may seem like an easy task; throughout my sociology career I have overheard many times thinking in a sociological perspective means to think “outside of the box”, but the reality of sociological thinking is much more complex than that. To think in a sociological perspective requires a person analyze the phenomena they are studying critically and pose questions on how and why the phenomena is occurring or has occurred. One requirement of being able to think sociologically is being able to incorporate the knowledge and understanding a person possesses with those of others. By allowing others ideas and perspectives to influence one’s own in a positive manner it allows a person to grow and better understand the content…
