Writing Supplement: Drexel University From the time I stepped foot into an actual studio until the many times I have stepped out of one, my heart has been in my stomach. Rather than rub of as anxious about being whether or not I`m perfect, instead I find myself a bit uneasy but open to whatever comes my way in the time being. My mother is to blame for. Once she placed me in my first official dance school, let alone class, this feeling has resided with me. For every class and rehearsal I did/do find myself in I experience such a feeling. Dance has affected me my entire life by allowing me to understand that we all must take that extra leap in order to be successful. Although is solely meant for self expression I have

Although these words were discouraging they have been a form of motivation. I have been working to prove that these statements are myths and to leave my own personal mark in this profession Since I was placed in my first class I have continued training since. Fortunately for me I have migrated from company to company in Brooklyn,NY. I have been apart of three, where I have been exposed to the some of the basic styles/techniques to the most complex. A normal dance schedule for me can consist of training in school for roughly ten hours and outside of school for another six.Within these time frames I am encouraged to focus on some of the basic styles of dance: ballet and modern. These are few of many styles that help me improve my flexibility, stamina and prepare me for other challenges that come my way. My instructors will often do short lectures to expand our knowledge of dance history and make myself and others more aware of what goes on

After finding a dance class and contemplating for a long while, I finally gathered up courage to try it. The hour train ride was nerve-racking; I was on my way to a dance studio, somewhere I would’ve never imagined myself going. I ended up arriving an hour early, before everyone else. Greeted by an empty hall, I sat…

“Training as the medium through which”, chapter 3, written by Melanie Bales is a chapter that is written on the theme of self-discovery and how as dancers we could apply the ideas to ourselves. Melanie Bales is a professor at Ohio State where she graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy. Bales also studied at the Joffrey School and was a Harkness Ballet Trainee. Throughout this article, I experienced different things for myself when going through and reading each section. A lot of references that were stated in the book allowed me to see dance through a whole new perspective.…

Dance as a profession is very hard on our bodies both physically and mentally. Personally, this is something that I ask myself every day, but I know that deep down inside that dance is what I live for. Twyla Tharp realized that if you create art and love dance, you’d best believe in yourself with no ulterior motives. It took her seven minute dance on stage to give Tharp the development backbone she needed to continue in the dance career. Martha Graham once said that it takes ten years to become a dancer.…

In these classes you had to be able to take the teachers criticism and use it to get better at the dance. As a dancer, I have put in numerous hours inside and the outside of school. I have learned that dance is not easy and many underestimate the ability that dancers have. With all the classes students take inside of Jackson School for the Arts (JSA), it is hard to fit in something like a gym. We are taking rigorous classes with homework that can take up to hours each night. It would be difficult to be involved in a sport when you have already spent almost an hour dancing earlier in the day.…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

I joined my first choir in seventh grade. It was the school’s seventh grade choir and it had about a hundred kids in it. I enjoyed being there so much that the thought of the arts just stuck. Ballet Vs Musical Theatre

There are many styles of dance, and they all require different skill sets. The two styles of dance that I am discussing today are both styles that tell a story on stage over multiple hours, introducing many different characters and having a beginning, middle and end. However, going to see, and training to perform in ballet and musical theater are two very different experiences. Ballet is one of the oldest dance styles and, while it tells a story, there is no speaking, singing or any other words to be said. You portray a story through very complex movements that take a lifetime of practice to get perfectly.…
