Born with a cleft lip. Numerous surgeries. A few years ago as I was falling asleep I remembered what I believe to be my first memory-- both arms restrained miles away from the stitches on my tortuously itching face. Is that trauma? The next several years were punctuated with appointments and surgeries with various physicians who fixed my face. At risk of wading into the poetic, the dreams to become a physician and practice medicine grew from the admiration I had for the doctors who took care of me. My desire to learn and practice medicine surged with the passing of seasons in my life. I seek to become a physician and to devote myself to the very science that has made my life liveable so that I may treat disease and help others live well.

A younger me sought to be a physician with simple intentions to help others and save the world. I applied and was accepted to the new Health Sciences Academy at Bayside High School which was on the other side of town. Although it was difficult to leave my friends, studying at the Academy was a rewarding experience. I had access to the enthusiastic instruction of A&P and pathophysiology as well as near-monthly lectures from physicians and other health professionals.

Rosenblum of Operation Smile, who had recently performed my final aesthetic lip revision. Before I left, I was able to interview him and asked if he was glad he became a doctor. He replied with a hard yes and went on to say that although the path to medicine was tough it was worth it. These words resonated with me and I took them to heart.
