2a. A scapegoat is one who is blamed for mistakes even though it may not truly be their fault. One is mainly made a scapegoat because it is convenient or easy to place blame on that particular person. The most obvious example of a scapegoat in this story is Mr. Summers when he is blamed by Mrs. Hutchinson for not giving her husband enough time to choose a slip of paper. Another moment in the story that possibly involved a scapegoat is when Old Man Warner blames young people for having the idea of stopping the lottery in the north village. This would be considered a scapegoat because he easily puts blame on that specific group even though it could not be their doing.

Scapegoating is used when a problem occurs and people start to look for a person to blame for their mishaps. People often choose a person that they think is powerless and cannot fight back. This theory is highlighted in Arthur Miller's play The Crucible which affected people on a much more individual status and in an event that terrorized America called 9/11 where a group of people were blamed.…

Crucible synthesis essay During times when fear and stress are present in our lives or we are don’t want to suffer the consequences of a situation we tend to use scapegoating as a method to get out of or avoid the situation. As humans, we seem to always be subconsciously looking for things to scapegoat weather it is for our benefit, their own problems and/or society’s problems as seen in the crucible during the Salem Witch Trials. In many of her writings, Shirley Jackson uses adaptations of her life and personal journeys of alienation from a comfortable yet dysfunctional childhood, combined with the miseries of an unhealthy marriage while raising and projecting a happy family, "Life Among the Savages", which caused her devaluation by traditional male critics who had difficulty reconciling Jackson’s housewife status with her production of Gothic narratives (Hague), to the many riveting and haunting short stories, “The Lottery”, that would quickly become one of the best- known and most frequently anthologized short stories in English (Franklin) and to this day still leave a magnitude of her readers in wonderment and dismay.
