The old man who has been a part of my life for the past two years was smiling back at me and my eyes clouded with memories of this past season. Two weeks prior to what would be the last race of my season was League finals, which took place on our home course. The course we spent hours training on day after day, would be the same course that holds me back or helps me shine. My team consisted of only six runners; six runners who battled for third place week after week in hopes of possibly qualifying for CIF this year. Except qualifying as a team no longer became an option that day, that day would be the day I ran my heart out in hopes of qualifying one last time. As the race began I took the lead holding third the entire race, until the end. As the finish line neared, I lost my spot and finished in fourth. Fourth out of thirty-six runners, and the tears of joy flowed because I qualified: alone. …show more content…

One day, however, he pulled me off to the side, looked me in the eye and said, “Christine you’re an amazing runner with a lot of potential. You just don’t know it yet.” Those words stuck in my brain and repeated in my head while I stood alone in my lane smiling back at

There is nothing I enjoy more than waking up on a cool saturday morning in preparation for a cross country meet. Sports have always been a big part of my daily life, but I never imagined that cross country would have such an immense impact on my way of living. I had never even thought about pursuing distance running until my friend, Jared, tried to convince me to join the cross country team in 7th grade. At that time, the thought of running for long periods of time did not seem appealing to me. At first, I did not even consider this notion, but with a couple days of persuasion, I decided that I would give it a try.…

I have always been fast at running. In middle school, I would always be the first to finish the mile long run for my Physical Education class. At that time, I often ran the mile in seven minutes flat, always being at least thirty seconds ahead of every other student. It was the same outcome in high school as a freshman; however, that was not the case later on. As a sophomore, I ran the mile in seven minutes, but another sophomore, George, would run it in six minutes and fifty seconds.…

My nerves were on edge, my adrenaline was pumping; I watched our third leg trailing our school’s rival, Hastings, the anchor was up next for our 400 freestyle relay and the only thing that stood in the way of winning or losing the race was me. Immediately I dove in; the sight of my opponent's feet next to me made me swim harder and faster. Coming into the fourth and last lap I used everything that I had left in me to finish strong. Right at that moment, I saw an opportunity and took advantage of it, I noticed my opponent was closing in too early. Sprinting to the wall as fast as I can, I glanced at the time score and saw a bright florescent number one next to my lane, at that moment I was at loss of words.…
