I believe the true answer to the question is being someone that does these things on a daily basis and does not know they are doing it. I think I have what it takes to help shape the airmen of tomorrow. Throughout my Air Force Reserve and civilian career, I have had the honor of being mentored by some great NCOs, SNCOs, and officers. They helped me achieve the drive for success and excellence that I still have today. I try to push that drive onto everyone I

An NCO that wasn’t afraid to let go of the reigns and let his Soldiers have the opportunity to become that same leader. The lessons I learned from MSG Howard still inspire me to be the most competent and confident leader since we parted in 2010. Until this year, I never really saw the importance of having a mentor, and I think this is because I rejected the idea of being completely vulnerable with another person. Although, this section in MacDonald’s book really brought into perspective that as a leader without someone wiser than myself, I will not be “sharpened” or in other words, I will not grow in my faith the way I wish to. A mentor who is not afraid to be honest, and call me out on my wrongs, but also recognize my strengths is important. Specifically, I find my mentor quick to call me out when she feels I am not being fully honest (which is a lot), and I need that. I have began to think how hard life would be without her by my side, and I thank God everyday for bringing her into my life.…

I still remember how scared I was when I stepped in to the yellow foot prints when I got off the bus at RTC Great Lakes in 2004. The thought of becoming an officer never even crossed my mind because I always felt that I wasn’t smart enough, tough enough, or big enough. I was afraid to fail because I never stepped outside of my comfort zone. I can now say with certain conviction that it was the Navy, in particular two chiefs that help push me beyond my own expectations. This is what I feel I have to offer as an officer in the United States Navy.…

Life, experience, mentorship and above all else failure has definitively shaped me as a leader. Mentorship and experience directly correlate to the profession of arms and the development of leadership proficiency. However, I find that the spectrum of life and lessons from failures (both professionally and personally) more significantly contribute to leader development in the form of maturity and ability.…
