Jazz Concert Report The performance I had attended for this report was the Winter Jazz Concert. At the concert they played six musical selections, five of which were original compositions, making them far more difficult. In this report, I will be discussing the pieces I heard that night at the performance. As a side note, though I have gone to the concert, my memories of every detail in the pieces are a bit hazy since I was not able to recored the performance. For this reason I will be using professional recordings of the songs off of JWPepper to help with this report, while also tying in information about the live performance. The first selection of the night was “Loose Change” by Sammy Nesticol. This piece had a very laid back feel to it, with its moderate tempo and choral parts between the various sections of instruments. There were numerous times in the piece when the entire brass or the woodwind section would come together on rhythms and play chords together creating a fool smooth sounds that glided over the audience. This piece was had more energetic vibe than some of the other pieces with slightly louder sound over all and its use of crescendos that brought a sound of power to the ensemble. Another interesting thing I heard in this song was the use of slight dissonance between the trumpets on some of their chords. This gave a wild feel to the song, but it still maintained its smooth demeanor. The trumpet solo in this song was also impressive. The soloist had nice tone and his note accuracy was fairly good, but one of the only problem I had with the solo was that it was a little hard to hear at times. This could either be do to the soloist playing too soft or from the ensemble playing over him. This problem could be easily fixed by watching the conductor for cues to play softer so that the soloist does not get dropped out by the
