Essay 3- Cultural Relativist I am definitely a cultural relativist because I respect beliefs, values and practices of a culture from the viewpoint of that culture itself. I believe that all cultures are worthy in their own right and are of equal value. Being right or wrong are culture-specific and what is considered immoral in one society may be considered immoral in another, and, since no universal standard of morality exists, no one has the right to judge another society’s customs. Right or wrong is determined on the individual or by society. However, since truth is not objective, there can be a no objective standard which applies to all cultures. In other words, no one can say a person is right or wrong, it’s just a personal opinion and no society can pass judgment on another society. Different cultures believe different things. One does not need to be an anthropologist to see that the morality, ritual, and religion vary more and more the further you travel, no matter what direction. Not only do these values organizes the lives of people but also the meaning behind that, whether it’s political or cultural. For example, Hindus celebrate a festival by throwing colored powder in the air and dancing with friends and family. This might be seen as a wrongdoing by different a culture because of all the toxic chemicals in the color powders and all other health related issues that comes with it. Yet, this value and practice that Hindus perform have a meaning behind it. For them, it’s a way for everyone to come together to forget, forgive and repair relationships with others. Also, it’s a based on religious legends and just a huge mythological significance. Therefore, this is what defines and makes a certain culture unique whether it has to do with morality, ritual or
