To be treated as “less-than-human” is when a person or people treat others as an animal or as a life form that has no meaning whatsoever. One reason for this to take place is as individuals feel the need to prove their dominance over others. For example, slaves in the not distant past were treated as if their lives had no meaning. One reason for a person to be a bystander is that people naturally fear for their own lives and if this person were to try and stop the incident from happening their own life could be at stake.
