I am American drummer and composer Gene Jackson. This letter is on behalf of my colleague multi-talented pianist and composer Gabriel Guerrero in support of his visa application.
I had been a world renowned successful professional musician for the last 37 years. My career has allowed me to share stage and recordings with the most prominent musicians of the recent era. My broad touring and recording credentials include Oscar Academy Award Winner and 14-time Grammy Award Winner pianist Herbie Hancock with whom I recorded and toured from 1993 to 2000; additionally, with fellow Grammy Award Winners Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Elvis Costello, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Joe Lovano, Dianne Reeves among many others. Gabriel is always working on new material as well as crafting new ideas for his improvisations which I am always eager to hear. He can bring music that allow me to stretch and be creative; he can also enrich my compositions inspiring the other band members to create new ideas and ways to play it. Every time I play in New York, without hesitation I ask Mr. Guerrero to take the piano chair in my band. I always know he is the perfect fit. He brings his talent and powerful playing to any musical situation. This view is shared by most musicians I know. It would be difficult to find someone to replace him given his broad knowledge and exceptional gift.
Mr. Guerrero has gained the respect of the critics and from the musical community with his continuous musical contributions. I consider Mr. Guerrero to be one of the most influential and lead pianists of his generation. His contributions to our music had been immeasurable. Without doubt I recommend him for this opportunity so that he can remain in the United States. I look forward to work with him on future

I'm sipping herbal tea while listening to my bandmate's vulnerable tenor voice being captured over an instrumental we recorded earlier in the week. This is heaven. We're in Athens, Georgia working woth with an engineer/producer we've both admired for quite some time (he's worked on some of our favorite records by some of our biggest influences). I mean, this guy's a wizard or something. I'm watching him record tracks and edit them with speeds unimaginable; and I'm listening to my partner in art deftly weave his voice and thoughts in and around the floating tapestry of rhythm and melody we co-created, and I can't help but be overtaken by a warm sense of appreciation for the dedicated mastery present in this room.…

As both a male cheerleader and performer, being ostracized is not rare. Overcoming this feeling has helped me realize that cheerleading and musical performances are significant aspects of my identity, as well as some of my best memories of high school. Standing in the exquisite balcony of Carnegie Hall, the rotunda of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Museum, or the wings of a stage in Hershey Park could never prepare me for the rejection I routinely felt throughout high school. Being a male performer, I found myself feeling dismissed by the rest of my school. Nevertheless, my dedication to our music department has contributed to plentiful self-growth, countless performances, awards and accolades, but ultimately it has provided me with outstanding…
