Elisa does not seem to have an intimate relationship with Henry, perhaps due to his dismissive behaviour to Elisa

Alcée Arobin is a very interesting character in the novel thus far; he is different from the other men that we have encountered in the novel. He seems to understand Edna’s artistic soul because he is a charming and passionate soul. After meeting Edna she is marked by his presence as well as how he is also marked by her presence and he makes it a point to make her fall in love with him. His alluringness towards Edna makes her feel confused, it is almost as if he has caught her under a spell. Edna the maid is a vital character within the play "An Inspector Calls" that emphasises both the Birling's superiority and capitalism within the town of Brumly. " Yes Ma'am" and "Please Sir" highlight to the audience that Edna is of a lower class than the Birling's which illustrates her lowly status and at the same time the Birling's superiority. Edna has been incorporated into the play to illuminate to the audience of the Birling's capitalist actions and as a symbol of their wealth. Priestley has given Edna little dialogue to highlight to the audience that she is of a lower class and she is used within the play to make it clear to the audience how the upper class treat the lower class. This can be seen as ironic, as the Birling family seem…

In a discussion of Pride and Prejudice, one issue that has been discussed is the development of Darcy and Elizabeth throughout the whole story. On one hand, from the beginning, Elizabeth has been the smart mind sister but does she change and develop into a well-rounded individual? Over the span of the novel, we see her self-development, a developing of her character as she comes to more prominent information and comprehension of herself and other individuals. On the other hand, in the beginning, Darcy is snobbish and arrogant, he is also completely honest and sure of himself. My own view is that Darcy and Elizabeth have to and do change through the course of the story.…

Summary of the reading Jane English was a philosophy professor at the University of North Carolina. She believes that we have two types of relationships and they are reciprocity relationships and friendship relationships. She also makes us understand the “duties of friendships” and that “favors do create debts.” When you ask for a favor from someone and they help you out you are entering a debt, because if they later come back and ask you for a favor, you will feel compelled to do it because they did you a favor when you asked. However, when you are friends with someone, both of you share the same amount of sacrifice “but friendship is characterized by mutuality rather than reciprocity” (English 761).…
