“I believe in evolution, scientific inquiry, and global warming; I believe in free speech, whether politically correct or politically incorrect, and I am suspicious of using government to impose anybody 's religious beliefs -including my own- on nonbelievers.” That brilliant quote was written by President Barack Obama in his book, The Audacity of Hope. I for one, completely agree with this statement. When we talk about what evolution truly means there is a disconnect in the scientific community. Throughout this course I have started to question everything I thought I knew about evolution and what it truly means to be a human. I used to believe the idea of evolution was as simple as caterpillar morphing into a butterfly, but as turns out I was wrong, the evolution of species is way more complicated than that and its history is much richer as well. Evolutionary anthropology is defined as the study of the changes in human physiology, human behavior and discovering the relationship that exist between hominids and non-hominid primates. Evolution is a polarizing subject that some people may choose to regard it as fact while others may choose to regard it as a mere theory. Most people, including scientists believe that evolution is a fact because the evidence supporting it is very strong. However, others are reluctant to believe that evolution has happened because it may contradicts their holy beliefs and because no one has seen it happen. Evolution is a theory or a fact only to the extent that people are willing to accept it a theory or a fact. The Scopes Trial in 1925 sheds some light on the attitudes that people once had towards evolution.…

Many would say that evolution is just a theory and opposite of that opinion many would say religion is just a book. Yet, evolution hasn’t been shut down in schools across the US for the last 80 years. America has been built off of the belief in God and that is the way it has been over 241 years. It wasn’t till 1954 that Dwight D. Eisenhower decided to put “One nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance to make that statement true. Then, around 2013-2015 the Pledge of Allegiance was taken out of schools because parents were angry their kids were being forced to follow a religion at school that they might not follow at home.…

Evolution is the theory used to describe exactly why life on earth changes the way it does. It is evident that all things change throughout time, but understanding the reason behind these changes can be infuriating. In Evolution for Everyone, David Sloane Wilson bonds the basic concepts of evolutionary theory with different disciplines such as: art, religion, language, and pro-social behaviors. Wilson establishes a unity between the evolutionary theory and the development of culture, language, art, and other disciplines. Wilson describes the basics of evolutionary theory for the readers who may not be well acquainted with it.…

“Describe some research studies which have addressed the issue of whether non-human animals have a “theory of mind ', and explain what these studies have allowed psychologists to conclude in answer to the issue.” Chimpanzees are humans closest relatives and therefore are a good animal to study when attempting to assess whether non human animals have a theory of mind. This essay will attempt to first define what is meant by theory of mind, then will look at three studies and their approaches to researching theory of mind in non- human animals. It will briefly summarise, in turn, what each study attempted to achieve, how the study was conducted, and the subsequent finding of each study, specifically looking at areas of theory of mind which relate to chimps ' understanding of human problem solving and visual perception in both humans and other chimpanzees. “Theory of mind” refers to the way in which people understand other humans as thinking beings.…

Glaciers melting, water rising, the earth getting hotter: what do we usually attribute this to? Global warming, also known as global climate change. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, global warming is “the recent increase in the world 's temperature that is believed to be caused by the increase of certain gases (such as carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere.” Interestingly enough, most of the scientific community is in turmoil about if global warming is really happening, making it difficult for the population to know what to think.…

By James Gorman According to scientists from Harvard and Yale universities, chimpanzees have the mental capabilities required for cooking. That may seem unimpressive, but according to the scientists it is hard for chimps and other primates to give up food that is already in hand. However, the chimps proved to have impressive self control around raw food once they knew it had the possibility to become cooked.…

Evolution has received mostly negative feedback from society, especially from non-scientists. Perhaps, evolution is controversial because it speaks to the beginning of humanity. Controversy originated from individuals’ religious backgrounds and faith in a higher being but they do not consider the definition of evolution. Noted by David Jacobs—Professor of Animal Evolution and Systematics at the University of Cape Town, non-scientists believe evolution states that human evolved from baboons. However, evolution only claims that humans and other non-human primates share a common ancestor (Jacobs, 2015).…
