“It’s a round ball and a round bat, and you got to hit it square.”(Pete Rose) The evolution of the bat has changed the game dramatically from the wood bat to the medal. Baseball is one of America’s greatest past times since 1846, because of all of the drama and excitement. Making Wood Bats
For a forest of trees to be able to be used for the making of bats they have to be between fourteen and sixteen inches in diameter and at least fifty years old. They made them out of hickory lumber, because it was a more common wood. Later they found out that you can also use ash wood to make bats, because it is a lot lighter than a hickory bat. (The Evolution of Baseball Bats). Some players like ash bats, because it is more flexible which means it won’t break as easy. That allows a player to have their favorite, or hot bat longer. Other players like the hickory bats, because they are harder, so it make a loud crack noise that people like to hear. They are also built to have more power in them. In the picture to the above, the bat on the top, is ash wood, and the one on the bottom is maple wood. (Stamp). In 2001 a San Francisco Giants player named Barry Bonds set the record for the most home runs hit in a single season. This was a record that no one thought was beatable. When the word got out that the bat Bonds was using was made of maple everyone wanted a maple bat, because players copy other players success.
