The Pros And Cons Of Automobiles

Good Essays
The early automobiles weren 't initially thought of as convenient transportation or as a positive innovation. People were skeptical of automobiles due to the dangers that potentially came with them. Before automobiles, people were accustomed to using horses to get around, which were safer but definitely not as fast as cars. An automobile typically has four wheels and can hold 1-6 people, depending on the vehicle. Cars that use gasoline are powered by an engine that allows it to move and can vary in size and power. The first gas-powered automobile was invented and patented in 1886 by Karl Benz. Electric cars are powered by a battery that needs recharging once the battery’s energy is depleted. . Gas is not the most cost effective or the least polluting, but it is accessible and the most reliable. Our society depends on these gas-powered vehicles for transportation of any kind, whether it 's driving across the country or just going to the corner store. Henry Ford once said: "You can have any color as long as it 's black,” which was funny to me, but true at the time. Instead of having to ride around in a black Model T, nowadays vehicles are fully customizable and allows you to choose the color and the type you want. There 's plenty of varieties of vehicles, like trucks, vans, or cars, and each are bought and utilized for different reasons. Even though the majority of people in the world have gasoline powered vehicles, electricity powered vehicles are still purchased and preferred by some. Both power sources have their advantages and disadvantages. Electric cars are considered easier to maintain, but cost more due to a lesser number of them being built compared to gas powered automobiles. Electric cars run off a battery that doesn 't last but around 150 miles, which isn 't far compared to the average gas powered car. With a gas powered car, all you need to do is refuel at a gas station and you’re ready to go; whereas in an electric car you have to wait for it to charge at home or at one of the limited charging stations …show more content…
Alternative fuel sources are a popular subject when referring to the automobile; electricity and hydrogen powered vehicles seem to be the most efficient aside from gasoline. With the electric car technology advancing at a rapid rate, in the near future it has the potential to come closer to overtaking gasoline powered vehicles. Protecting the environment seems to be a big priority, as it should be, and the electric car can prevent/decrease pollution. Gasoline is a non-renewable resource and at some point in the future it will run out, unlike electricity. There are multiple car companies producing electric cars, like Tesla and BMW. These two car companies specialize in making electric cars that are luxurious and fast, which some thought was not possible; instead of having to sacrifice speed to save the environment, you can have both. Autonomous cars are another technology of the future. Currently, there is a self-driving car manufactured by Google that doesn 't even have pedals or a steering wheel! This is a small vehicle made to carry two people from one destination to another, like a “mini taxi.” The safety of the Google car is questionable to some, due to it being operated by a computer that has the life of it 's passengers in it 's

The average person today will fill up their vehicles with different grades of petrol, because that is what the common vehicle takes. They normally don’t consider a substitute for the petrol that they fill up their cars with. Although petrol is the most common, it isn’t the only source of power for a car; electricity and diesel can be used instead of the general petrol that powers most automobiles. Although they differ from each other, electricity and diesel are replacements to the average petrol received at a fuel station. Electricity run vehicles have large high capacity batteries that produce low horsepower but, nevertheless fast automobiles.…

Hydrogen fuel cell cars have a pump and go method of operation, moreover, they are not plagued by battery range and lifespan setbacks that electric cars are. Although, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are plagued by a lack of infrastructure as electric cars are, as well as, higher price tags compared to their internal combustion engine rivals. These setbacks may be overcome just the same as with electric cars over time, leaving the benefits much greater than a solely electric powered car.…

Although owners of the Prius will be purchasing gasoline less frequently than non-electric drivers, that still does not compare to the no gas spendings of the LEAF. Although the Nissan LEAF would save the driver much more money than the Toyota Prius, the LEAF is missing something that the Prius has: an engine. Yes both cars contain electric motors, but the fact that the Prius contains both an engine and an electric motor make it a better choice of car as far as performance goes. As previously stated in this paper, the engine in hybrid cars allows them to have as much, if not more, power than regular cars. The Toyota Prius, being a hybrid, has an electric motor and a gasoline engine that work together to help provide additional power to drive the car (“How Hybrids Work”).…

On one hand, these numbers seem to point towards the usage of electric cars as a positive, on the other hand, in order for electric cars to be practical, the entire transportation infrastructure would need to make some changes. The amount of time and money needed to create such a new infrastructure may be the very thing that kills off electric cars. This evidence will help me prove that electric cars are more of a hassle than they are beneficial in reducing CO2…
