Evolution Of College Sports

The sector I chose to write about was collegiate sports. I thought it was only right to write about college sports given I play football in college. I think big time college athletics are very interesting through the athletes, marketing, media and fans. College sports has exploded in popularity in recent years. Some people prefer college sports over professional sports. College athletics will forever grab my attention throughout the year. First, I want to start with some history of collegiate sports, the first collegiate sports club was created by Yale University in their boating club in 1843. This was followed by rival Harvard in also creating a boating club. They made history by creating the first rowing match in 1852 on Lake Winnipesaukee …show more content…
For example, the University of Alabama’s football program. Everybody knows they have won many championships with Bear Bryant and Nick Saban, sixteen to be exact. This program is successful because of the recruits they get every year. That goes for every successful team in college. They are a good program because of coaching, but really it comes down to the recruiting class you have. Another successful program is Duke Basketball, Coach K and the Cameron Crazies have made a name for themselves over the years. Coach K arguably will go down in the NCAA Hall of Fame. The Cameron Crazies make it so hard for you to play there when everyone is on top of you yelling at the top of their lungs. These successful programs get a lot of revenue and media attention which will help improve facilities so they can stay on …show more content…
I first think it is very cool that so many people around the world can come and become teammates just like that. That shows the magic of sports, and how it can bring people together to achieve a specific goal. Another thing that interests me is how college athletes can balance school and their sport and still compete at a high level. If these athletes do not make it in the classroom then they will not play on Saturdays. It is very important that these student-athletes compete at a high level in school and sport. Another thing that interests me which is specific, but the rise of college football. When I was growing up it was popular but nothing like it is now. The amount of attention and pressure these athletes receive in big time division one is insane. The media has blown up college football creating different talk shows, networks, and multiple social media accounts about college football. I love it, and I love the support that college football is receiving. I believe it will only get bigger from here. Collegiate sports are something I could talk about for days, and it will always be special to

College athletics make more money than even professional sports. Joe Nocero said, “[T]he hypocrisy that permeates big-time college sports takes your breath away. College football and men’s basketball have become such huge commercial enterprises that together they generate more than $6 billion in annual revenue, more than the National Basketball Association. A top college coach can make as much or more than a professional coach; Ohio State just agreed to pay Urban Meyer $24 million over six years” (Van Rheenen, 552). Athletes never see a dime of that money that people pay to come and see them.…

The documentary ‘Schooled: The Price of College Sports” directed by Ross Finkel, analyzes the perspective of the players in the argument of whether student-athletes should be paid for their services and performances in sport at the collegiate level. Throughout the film, the history of the NCAA is discussed along with its creation and reign to become a wealthy corporation. The documentary analyzes people such as Walter Buyers (Founder of the NCAA), Jonathan Franklin (Former University of North Carolina Running Back) and many others to thoroughly examine the corruption that lies in the NCAA and the activities they take part in to remain such a prominent corporation. ‘Schooled: The Price of College Sports’ served as an eye opener to me about the…

Collegiate athletics is like no other because an athlete's pride is valued. Unlike professional sports, college athletes are not awarded extra benefits for choosing one team over another. The table is set for the athlete to choose which offer to accept based on their interest, not on money. This unique aspect will not exist if colleges were made to pay players, as monetary compensation will start a bidding war. Additionally, the truth is that most colleges cannot afford to compensate players.…

Many court cases have foreshadowed to a change in college sports as we know it. The first case being NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma, in which the Supreme court ruled that constricting the amount of events that an NCAA member may broadcast on television violated section 1 of the Sherman Act because it “eliminated competitors from the broadcast television market” (Edelman qtd. “A Short Treatise” 80). Also, the Court explained that “when there is an agreement in terms of price or output, no elaborate industry analysis is needed to demonstrate the anticompetitive characteristics of such agreement. ”(Edelman qtd.…

Palaima: “ There are about 400,000 student athletes nationwide, and 99.5 percent of them will spend their lives doing something other than playing professional sports,” yet even with this knowledge the NCAA perpetuates and engages in a system that sets these student athletes up for failure. There is no other explanation for these actions other than the NCAA own prestige and monetary gain. Another source that touches on these issues is a documentary titled “Hoop Dreams” directed by Steve James; the documentary follows two young Black men raised in poverty. The only reason these young men are afforded any opportunity to receive a form of higher education is their prospective athletic worth. The institutions, coaches, and talent scouts only appear interested in the two main characters of the documentary as a means of prestige or income.…

A school that does not have a lot of money is West Virginia. There are also a lot of schools that don’t have a mascot. If they don’t have a mascot than that normally means that they don’t have enough money. If a school like West Virginia don’t have enough money and if other schools started to pay their athletes then that would not be fair to all of the other schools then that would mean all of the top recruits would go to the school with the most money to go and get payed. If they schools don’t have enough money then they should stop giving out so many scholarships.…

UNC Chapel Hill for example was recently in the spotlight for a scandal dealing with their basketball program. People close to the basketball program there did homework for some players and even enrolled in fake classes just to keep some players eligible to play. And while UNC has had recent success, their academic reputation will always be stained because of that scandal. These scandals also come with harsh consequences from the NCAA, some of which include probation, reduction of scholarships, postseason bans, and even sometimes the shutdown of the entire program for one academic year. All of these atrocities to college sports would be eliminated if athletes were not required to attend…
