Basketball Evolution
A game of finesse, high speed and show-time is how most people would describe their experience at a basketball game. It is hard to believe that the first basketball teams shot at peach baskets. Also, players were not allowed to dribble the ball when basketball was first invented. If compared, it is easily seen how the sport of basketball dramatically changed over the years.
Born November 6, 1861 in Ontario, James Naismith designed and founded the game of basketball. He was to discover a game that would keep football players in shape during the off season. Basketball origin dates back almost two hundred years and the first game of basketball was played in Springfield, Massachusetts in December. The basic of the game is still the same although it has changed very much. The North Eastern part of the United States, it snows a lot so there were not many things for children to do when it was cold outside. Basketball also allowed children to keep themselves in shape. Modern day basketball has over one hundred rules when the original game only had thirteen set rules. The original rules are not known today, but they were very odd. The ball was not allowed to be dribbled. Players had to stand in the stationary position and pass each other the ball. The original thirteen rules had a slower pace than the modern day game. Dribbling was established and finally made the game much faster and also gave players freedom to move around the court. Many of the first players of basketball were football players which made Naismith fear they would make his game into indoor football. A soccer ball was the first ball used because it was easy to handle and soft enough, so the players would not get hurt.
