Every living thing has a different genetic make up or sequence, which can be expressed through how it looks or behaves. The differences between these expressions are called genetic variation. Genetic variation in turn is considered to caused by mutation which is the first mechanism of evolution. Mutations cause random changes in an individual’s DNA sequence. These changes are called alleles. The new alleles that are added to a particular gene pool is what causes evolution.
Mutations can be caused by a number of reasons. A reason for …show more content…
Sometimes when a specie is becoming extinct, genetic drift can actually hurt the species chances for survival. Genetic drift can sometimes speed up the rate of extinction, this is called genetic bottleneck. Genetic bottleneck almost always occurs when a specific organism relocates to an isolated environment, like an island for example. This relocation is known as the founder effect. Examples of animals who have suffered from genetic bottleneck are the Florida panther, the northern elephant seal, and the African cheetah. A good example of genetic drift would be the Florida panther. The Florida panther had a very low population count around 30-50. Scientists discovered that the Florida panther had a disturbingly low sperm level as well as oddly shaped sperm. Over the years the Florida panthers have grown in population size due to scientific programs put in place to defend against genetic
