The release of Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life that was published in 1859 and later the book The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex that was published in 1871 put doubts in people’s minds about whether the Bible was correct on the account of Genesis. This doubt made some people challenge their previous presuppositions and interpretations on Scripture which led to a change in their theology. Therefore, the Bible was no longer considered the inspired Word of God but became like other “historical books [that] are viewed not as offering accurate reporting and divinely authorized interpretation of past events but as factual inaccurate, often fanciful, propagandistic political documents.” Darwinism flourished because of the social gospel ideals and had a great impact on the liberalism movement which allowed them to view Scriptures differently so that they were able to tweak Scriptures to make their own theories which could live in harmony with evolution such as the gap theory in which there are billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, as well as the day-age theory which has a day not as a normal 24 hour period but as thousands or even millions of years for each day. Fundamentalists protested by making it against the law to teach evolution in public schools. In 1925 John Thomas Scopes was charged with teaching the theory of evolution. He was found guilty but the verdict was overturned. Thus evolution slowly crept into the elementary and high school science books. Now it is entwined into all of our children’s public school books, it is even found in math books. In fact, the whole trial may have been a farce in order to make evolution a household word. It was highly publicized in the media and at times seemed as a circus act instead of a courtroom. Now it taught as fact to our children at young ages and as a fact in all of our entertainment.
