The year is 1919. The world has just welcomed an illegitimate baby girl who will go on to achieve greatness as the first lady of Argentina. Her name, María Eva Duarte. Even though she had a tough childhood, grew up poor, and dropped out of high school, she lived to overcome many odds.Through her humanitarian efforts and her time served as the first lady of Argentina, Eva Peron is considered one of the most influential people in Argentine history.
Eva had a tough childhood, that led to her meeting her husband Juan. Eva was born on May 7, 1919 in the small Argentine town of Los Toldos. At age sixteen Eva dropped out of high school and went to Buenos Aires with a goal of becoming an actress. “In 1937, Perón landed her first film role in Segundos Afuera and got a contract to perform on the radio(Bio.com)”. Eva related with the lower class, since she grew up in the lower class. She supervised the Ministry of Health, which built new hospitals and established a program to fight different diseases successfully. “Evita also had a high public profile, visiting factories and hospitals, and holding meetings with those whom she was trying to help. As a result of this work, Evita also took an active interest in health policy, supervising programmes to eradicate some of the most crippling diseases including tuberculosis, malaria and leprosy(HISTORY).” Eva also set up the María Eva Duarte de Perón Welfare Foundation, which was funded by contributions from businesses, industrial firms and trade unions. This foundation soon became a semi official welfare agency which distributed various necessities such as food, medicine, money and clothes, to the underprivileged (whom she called “los descamisados”).
