Jack paints his face into a mask to hid his problems and tries to get away from them. Jack starts to paint his face and feels like is fear leave with his old face. "He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling. He capered toward Bill, and the mask was a thing of its own, behind which jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness" (Golding 64). This highlights how Jack's evil is forming to a constant level. Jack believes he can hid his self-consciousness behind a mask which allows him to act not of himself but as someone else. This allows all the darkness inside to seep out and for him to become more of a threat to others. When a character dies by Jack's hand he's chooses not to care about that character providing that evil is within him. After Jack kills someone he does not care about their death only the power he has gained. "'See? See? That’s what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone-' He ran forward, stooping. 'I'm chief!" (Golding 181) This clarifies Jack being savage. Jack just killed an important character and is now only concerned about the power he has obtained. Power is know to corrupt people but only if you let it. Jack lets this power corrupt him into the savage beast that all humans are in

Every character has what is known as a ‘dark side’, but not all of them show it. Instead they try to hide it. In Lord of the Flies, Jack Merridew uses face paint as basically a mask to make him more mean-looking when he’s hunting with his crew to hide his ‘dark side’. In Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll makes a potion that turns him into Mr. Hyde to cover Dr. Jekyll’s ‘dark side’. Last of all, in The Catcher in the Rye, main character Holden Caulfield, carries a red hunting hat everywhere he goes to ‘hide from reality and the world’.…

Covering his youthful face, the mask marks the budding transformation of a young boy into a savage. Despite this seemingly drastic shift in identity, it is still clear that Jack suppresses purity within him. After attempting to turn the group against Ralph and losing the election once again, Jack displays the humiliation and embarrassment that was witnessed at the start of the book. Expecting a definite win, Jack did not foresee the silence that followed, “breathless and heavy and full of shame. Slowly the red drained from Jack’s cheeks, then came back with a painful rush……

The demons of Afghanistan possess the many characters in The Kite Runner. Amir, our protagonist, is a very flawed character, with so many things wrong with him even though we must root for him, which could be an entirely different essay in itself. Baba is built up so much throughout the book, but turns out to be a fraud. He has a secret that he feels guilty about his whole life, which causes him to act the way he does. There are other characters like Sohrab (who has had many terrible things happen to him), Soraya (a seemingly good character who has committed sins in the past), and Assef (who is pure evil himself).…

The Ultimate Battle of Good vs Evil Many novels and events throughout history, such as the Bible or Winston Churchill vs Adolf Hitler, use the idea of a perpetual battle of good vs evil, where the two sides are in a constant power struggle to the end. In Lord of the Flies, the protagonist, Ralph, if given the chance to lead for an extended period of time on the island, would be a superior and more successful leader, in comparison to his rival, Jack. Both of these boys are very resourceful, have a exceptional sense of initiative, and possess a certain amount of wisdom. Both Ralph and Jack are interesting leaders in their own ways, but Ralph has an advantage given his ideas of long term rescue and safety. As a matter of fact, to be a successful…

When he first begins to paint himself with clay and charcoal from the island, Jack’s previously joyful “laughter [becomes] a bloodthirsty snarling” (Golding 64). Jack’s sudden change from a joyful laughter to a snarling, derisive snigger symbolizes the revelation of his inner darkness. In this moment, the light side of Jack buckles under the pressure of the increasing darkness in his heart, which opens a door for Jack’s animal-like self to appear in. In the same way, human nature’s innate dark side always finds a way to push its ugly head into good situations. For example, when hunting the sow, Jack moves “silent as the shadows” (Golding 84).…

Jack is a distinct example of the instinct of savagery, desire of power, and violent nature that the boys come to follow. Jack is Ralphs antithesis, or opposite in other words. Immediately, Jack retains the sense of decency and behavior that society has taught him. Susan Gulbin quoted Golding in saying "every man is part savage and that savagery is disguised or concealed only by the wall of civilization built by our ancestors" (Gulbin 87). Jack soon obsesses himself with hunting and devotes himself to the task, painting his face and giving himself over to bloodlust.…

Jack shows his first signs of bloodlust are shown as he details his first kill while laughing and shuddering, saying, “There was lashings of blood... you should have seen it (73).” He slowly dehumanizes himself while describing the gore, and he himself knows that he has committed something that would be socially unacceptable in England, however he feels like he can get away with it on the island, almost as though he enjoys the recognition the outcome of his actions give him. This contrasts Jack near the beginning of the novel where he was hesitant to kill. Jack’s inner beast of savagry overpowers the talented head boy that the boys once knew, and he is again a fine example of how the author shows innocence being lost when one commits crime…

Good vs. Evil in Lord of the Flies Does evil always prevail? Some say yes, some say no, but no was nearly the case in William Golding Lord of the Flies. “Good” and “evil” are very broad terms, but easily distinguishable in general. Good can be nearly anything with a positive connotation, but in the case of Lord of the Flies, it typically is anything that sticks to typical morals and values, whereas evil is immoral and barbaric acts that symbolize a regression to a primal nature. The conflict between this type of good and evil can be seen everywhere, religious texts, novels, nearly anything involving a protagonist against a person, force, or themselves.…
