Beowulf, sure of his win against a battle with Grendel’s mother, chose to go up against her being confident he would surely get the job done alone; uncertain of her strength, Beowulf’s revenge did not end as quick as he thought. Beowulf did not know that no sword could hurt her and he was furious up against Grendel’s mother; he only longed for fame and his revenge came in handy as “he tossed his sword aside, angry; the steel-edged blade lay where he’d dropped it,” (Unknown 17).
