“We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out” (Ray Bradbury). By beautiful stuff I mean the thoughts that swirl in your head or questions that leads you to your lightbulb moment. You are undoubtedly thinking about what I am saying to you right this moment, but just envision living in a world that eradicated any thinking and muted your expressions from ever being perceived. Ray Bradbury predicted a society resembling this in his book Fahrenheit 451 published 1953, an isolated society where books are made illegal by a government fearing an independent-thinking public.…

In writing classes the most common first day question is whether or not spelling and grammar will count. Most commonly students focus more on how they are writing and if it is grammatically correct or not rather than writing their inner thoughts. Jack Connor in his essay, “Will Spelling Count?”, argues that writing requires meticulous efforts through his use of cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and division and classification. Connor displays cause and effect throughout his essay to show how different ways of teaching affect students performance and effort level. There were no reading logs and no reflection projects. The only expectation was that the students would read the occasional assigned book, such as Romeo and Juliet or The Odyssey. However, these books were assigned intermittently enough to make the frustration I suffered from their restriction negligible. This newfound freedom led me to discover my new favorite genres of writing, which were, and still are, science fiction and dystopian novels. My initial experience with science fiction was H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.…
