Evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing is significant when it comes to patient safety and quality of care. EBP is a problem-solving approach which uses the best available evidence by integrating clinical expertise, patients’ preferences and most importantly, research to improve the care delivered to patients (Hwang & Park, 2015). Although EBP is gaining popularity due to its effectiveness in quality improvement in healthcare settings, nurses and other health professionals face challenges such as the lack of time, training, and knowledge, when applying new research to practice (Hwang & Park, 2015). The purpose of this article is to discuss why EBP matters in nursing, and how to overcome barriers that arise while …show more content…
Lack of knowledge concerning EBP along with time constraints, inadequate resources, and difficulty in understanding statistical analyses that are part of research articles are major barriers to adopting EBP (Majid et al., 2011). Other barriers include inadequate access to information technology, and lack of information searching skills (Majid et al., 2011). To solve these issues, nurses could seek assistance from librarians, as well as nurse managers and educators.
Librarians can assist nurses with the information searching aspect of EBP, while nurse educators and managers along with those nurses who have experience with implementing EBP, can aid with the application aspect (Majid et al., 2011). Librarians can teach nurses how to navigate through databases and how to effectively use terminology to find what they are looking for. Nurse educators, managers, and mentors can play important roles by incorporating new research into their programs and training to help nurses provide the best possible care to patients. Nurses can also motivate each other to learn and use new and improved practices, as well as share their knowledge of EBP with
