Evidence Based Practice In Nursing

For this discussion post, I will be discussing and defining research in nursing and evidence-based practice in nursing. With each definition I will be providing an example of the aforementioned definition in its appropriate context. Sample research questions and sample clinical questions will also be provided therein. It is the objective of this post to give clear and concise examples of exactly how research and evidence based practice impact the field of nursing. A conclusion that summarizes the given ideas in this discussion will be disclosed at the end of this assignment. Research is defined as a process that is a systematic, rigorous, critical investigation utilized to answer questions in regards to nursing phenomena (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). Research is a critical component of evidence-based practice that helps ascertain quality improvement in whatever specific area of what that research is related to. As an example, my nursing unit performed a study regarding post-operative infections and a patient’s bath basin. The proposed idea was that perhaps post-operative infection rates would decrease if the bath basin was changed every seventy-two hours. An example of a research question would be finding a relationship between an independent variable and that of a dependent variable in a specific scenario. Clinical questions are derived from clinical situations where there is no immediate answer. This is the fundamental backbone to proposing a clinical question such as, “Do exercise habits during middle age affect locomotive syndrome in old age?” (Nishimura et al., 2017).
