Evidence Based Practice In Nursing

Evidence based practice directly impacts the care we provide our patients and improve current practices. According to Jones (2014), “Practicing health professionals are able to offer a distinct perspective from academic researchers, making their contributions to the development of healthcare services research very important”. As healthcare providers it is important that we are active in research and look for ways to improve the care that is provided to patients. Nurses can provide invaluable insight in to ways that may improve care that patients receive since we provide hands on care. Recently it was recognized on our unit there was an increase in patients receiving a medication that they had an allergy to. With this coming to our attention as a group we tried to come up with a way to improve our current practice and minimize errors. One idea that our group came up with was having the patient’s allergy listed on their allergy band in an attempt to make it more identifiable. With evidence based practice we are able to being the research process to find ways that we can improve our practice with research (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). Once we had this idea we started to research this issue to see if we were able to find any supporting evidence on this. The type of study that we used was developmental study with a focus on the cross-sectional branch of this type of research.
