The profession of nursing has drastically changed and evolved over the past few decades and with these changes nurses are expected to adopt evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is defined as "the use of the newest evidence in making patient care decisions and such evidence typically comes from research conducted by nurses and other health care professionals" (Polit & Beck, 2014, p.2). Additionally, research has shown "patients who receive care based on evidence from well-designed studies experience nearly 30 percent better outcomes" (Bennett, 2009). Furthermore, implementing evidence-based research into practice leads to improved patient outcomes and cost-savings across the continuum of care. Finally, there are two general types of research …show more content…
Qualitative research is when information is investigated and gathered through observing, listening and through real-life experiences and is more subjective. The data is usually more in-depth and involves fewer cases or the research is on a smaller scale. In contrast, during quantitative research, investigators progress through a series of steps and have the ability to control the research situation in order to minimize bias (Polit & Beck, 2014). These are often investigations in which numbers are used to measure variables and create statistics. Qualitative research methods typically involve focus groups, in-depth interviews, and reviews of documents whereas quantitative research methods usually involve control groups, randomized-controlled trials, structured questionnaires and cohort studies. Now that we understand the two types of research methods, we can discuss nurses and their roles in …show more content…
Is there something we can look into and develop evidence-based data and recommendations regarding? Can we empower others to identify concerns and develop evidence-based policies and procedures? All of us have the knowledge to be able to identify patient care concerns whether it 's with care delivery, medication administration, communication or documentation. Furthermore, we have the opportunity to get involved in researching and effecting change within our organizations. Just remember evidence-based practice leads to higher quality of healthcare, improved population health and patient outcomes, including the patient care experience and reduced costs (Melnyk, 2016, p. 6). Therefore, it is imperative we stay abreast of the newest evidence based nursing research and continue to implement this research into our

The topic that I selected is increasing the evidence based practice use. Evidence based practice (EBP) is one of the popular topics in nursing today. It is defined as a “problem-solving approach to clinical decision making within a healthcare organization that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential evidence” (Hain & Kear, 2015, p. 2). Applying evidence based practice into our daily nursing practice can improve the quality of care of the patients.…

1)Research is different from clinical problem solving in that research is a systematic process by which new knowledge is discovered through the gathering of data and information from different sources(Fain, 2013). In addition, research is also done to support knowledge that already exists based on a theory to build on or improve the information that already exists. This can be knowledge that is directly applied to our practice or knowledge that needs further validation before application (Fitzpatrick, 2016). On the other hand, clinical problem solving is utilizing current knowledge to improve patient health. One of the most popular tools used by nurses in clinical problem solving is the nursing process.…

There are various evidence-based practice (EBP) models that are most commonly used in the field of nursing. These EBP models include Funk’s Model of Research Dissemination, Stetler’s Model of Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice, DiCenso et al. Model, The Iowa Model, Rosswurm and Larrabee Model, The ARCC Model, and Kitson’s Framework. The similarity across the Stetler’s, DiCenso et al., Iowa, and Rosswurm and Larrabee Model is that the basic steps or phases involved in the model is same. For instance: the first step in these models involves the identification of the problem in a clinical practice; next step is to conduct literature search, gather evidences from research, and compare it to current practice; then the decision is made…

Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

Evidence Based Practice Evidence-based practice (EBP) is best described by Hood (2014, p. 250) as “practice based on the best available evidence that also incorporates patient values and preferences and clinician judgement and expertise”. Nurses use evidence-based practice to improve and transform healthcare, by reforming care so that is more effective, safe, and efficient. The goal of most research utilization and evidence-based practice is to improve care delivery or client outcomes. Evaluation of evidence-based practice Bennett (2009) states that there are five key steps in the evidence-based process that include: “(1) formulation of a clinical question; (2) gathering the best evidence to answer the clinical question; (3) critical…

In today’s dynamics of health care, nursing researchers play a significant role in joint partnerships with other health care disciplines to develop evidence-based practices that improve the care and outcomes of their patients (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). The identification of a better way to practice patient care in my workplace has been discovered and descriptions of the steps required to implement this change are reflected upon. My organization encourages changes that promote the safety and quality of care of our clients as long as it is supported by the evidence. Nursing research, research utilization, and evidence-based practices are separate entities and in combination will provide the evidence that supports change to improve patient…

This new knowledge can then be used to directly and indirectly influence the delivery of evidence based nursing to link up to date research to practice (Burns and Grove, 2009). Linking research to practice provides what is known as evidence based research (Burns and Grove, 2009). Research is a scientific process that it designed to validate and refine pre-existing knowledge, and thus generates new knowledge can directly, and indirectly, influence the delivery of nursing practice (Burns and Grove, 2009). The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2015) code states that: All qualified nurses have a duty and responsibility to ensure their practice is in line with the best available evidence to ensure that the care given is safe and effective. A nurse's role to ensure they are providing is up to date evidence base care to ensure optimum care and improve health…

Evidence Based Practice Evidence based practice is of great importance in nursing because keeping ones practice up to date with credible well thought out information helps improve healthcare outcomes. This short essay will discuss the importance of evidence based practice, the promotion of better patient outcomes, as well as the importance of research and rigor when finding credible studies. The importance of Evidence based practice cannot be underestimated enough due to the fact that evidence based practice helps improve patient outcomes and save lives. Positive Aspects of Evidence Based Practice Nurses who research and review different literature such as systematic reviews of experimental studies, and meta-analyses of randomized controlled studies can help improve their nursing practice by keeping up to date with the latest and most effective way to care for patients. One such example on how nurses have implemented evidence based practice would be with the prevention of catheter associated urinary tract infections.…

According to Polit and Beck (2014), “evidence based practice, broadly defined, is the use of the best evidence in making patient care decision, and such evidence typically comes from research conducted by nurses and other health care professionals”. The nursing profession has been around for many decades and with many research and studies performed, it allows old practices to be revised and altered in order to provide better outcomes in patient care and safety. The ultimate goal in the medical field is to provide the best outcome for the patients. Conducting research, collecting data, and analyzing the results, allows revisions to be made in order to practice and provide quality care based on evidence. Additionally, EBP is done to ensure that a certain clinical question is answered based on multiple clinical trial results (Lewis, Heitkemper, Dirksen, & butcher, 2014).…

As we know that there is a relationship between research and practice it is imperative that nurses know what research qualifies any method that they have to put into practice In order to individualize patients’ needs instead of generalize care. What makes research so credible is because experiments are used to conclude any theories that scientists put in study. Different experiments must be performed in order to achieve the best evidence of a theory. Therefore, it is important for nurses to update their knowledge by always informing themselves about any current new researches.…

First, nursing has always used research findings to support data collection, to suggest interventions and evaluate the quality and growth of patient care. This method is called research utilization (Spector, 2008). In research utilization, the different results from the studies are conveniently selected for the application in nursing practice. For evidence based research, the nurses will select the best evidence from the research, the results are analysed, synthesized and then integrated into practice (Spector, 2008, p.…

Quantitative Versus Qualitative Research Methods in Public Administration Introduction Quantitative research is research that has no numerical inclination but rather focuses on the quality of the subject of research. It is usually focused on the opinionative aspect of the subject matter. This kind of research is usually more useful in areas that relate to public relations. Quantitative research on the other hand is research that can be counted (of a numerical nature). This research usually translates into numerical form that is -hard numbers and then eventually takes on statistical representation.…

Every decision or action made should be accurate and helpful for patients since care provided is directly related to life. Nurses should not just follow the rituals or routine practices without considering its effect or reasons behind. To be a responsible nurse, nurses should have an obligation to enhance their knowledge and understanding. Therefore, evidence-based practice is essential and important so I think it is beneficial for nurses to follow EBP as it helps nurses to update their knowledge so that more effective care can be provided and benefit the patients. However, EBP has its limitation although it has many benefits.…
