Programs vary between treatment programs to vocational educational programs. Such programs can help educate offenders before they return to society and can help them become law-abiding citizens of society. Today such programs are faced with the need to be maintained due to necessity to reduce recidivism within corrections. Due to programs that are evidence based which tend to have evidence support of success, most correctional facilities have maintained these types of programs to help the reduction of recidivism. (Seiter,…
ELMIRA (WENY) - Correction officers at the Elmira Correctional Facility, lined the streets outside the prison Monday afternoon to protest what they say is a lack of support from the state. The C.O.'s say there's been a rise in violence within prison walls, yet they're not given the appropriate staff or resources to keep themselves safe from the prisoners. Cars drivings down Davis street showed their support for the staff at the Elmira Correctional Facility by beeping a horn. Which is more than they say their employer, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) does for them.…
The Tennessee Department of Corrections should provide a records/correctional clerk to help the parole office until a full-time parole position becomes available to be placed in the budget. Such a position could serve as a stepping stone to promote within the agency once a four year degree is obtained. In addition, both positions are security in case of emergency situations and could be rotated between locations at the discretion of the institutional parole officers. Nassar (2007) explains that there are six important areas in which improvements can be made; making such changes would cover both employee performance and organizational productivity, (p. 5.2). Hypothetical Solution:…
Describe a Case The school to prison pipeline is a societal issue. The school to prison pipeline is also an issue in the field of social work as well. My case is based from Wilson article, (2014), Turning off the School-to-Prison Pipeline.…
The massive prison numbers pose one of the state of Texas biggest problems. I see this problem as one that is not being addressed which causes my question to arise; “With a problem so massive, what is being done to help the ones affected? Where along the line of correction can Texas make a change in favor to reform prisons or the policies that so many citizens are subject to? Is the issue of the Texas department of corrections one that is purposely being left unanswered?” On one end of the scale that is Texas criminal justice; those whom commit acts with criminal intent need to be punished.…
It is common practice when an expert knowledge of one specific field in a science improves best practices in the field of another system. For instance, an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is a scientific method of medical researches. This a method to utilize clinical research findings to improve medical decision making and lowers risk. From another side, there is a system of the Best-Evidence Rule In the field of criminal justice.…
Prisons are a world of their own with a social and economic system that utilizes their population, the prisoners. The severity and intensity of prisoners’ rehabilitation is a controversial topic. There is a long standing history of neglect and abuse of power, victimizing the physical and mental health of inmates. This corrupt and inhumane prison system is perpetuated by the labor system, its profits garnering support from various corporations and organizations. The labor system was built not to rehabilitate, but to exploit prisoners in the interest of business whilst preying on marginalized communities.…
As crime rates have continued to decline, especially in the recent years, criminal justice policy continues increase, therefore, leading to new social problems, such as a growth in the prison population, increased expenditures, and lengthier prison sentences. Over these decades, however, there clearly has been a cause for concern about the lack of accountability and evidence based practice in criminal justice policy in which is needed in order to justify these new social problems and the significant increases in the criminal justice system. Despite these calls for greater accountability and evidence based policy, a large gap continues to remain between these ideals and the realization of them (Mears, 2010). Evidently, these issues are in…
Incarceration Reform Rehabilitation has been undermined in our society and is an issue that must be discussed to the full extent. It is something that many people have disregarded as an option that may help the crisis of mass incarceration. Sure prisons create more jobs, but to what extent does this really help our society as a whole. The quality of teaching needs to improve immensely in public schools, so there can be a greater chance of success in the future and possibly dissolve the school to prison pipeline. This quality of education can inform students to be well versed when it comes to political issues such as mass incarceration.…
Across the United States, various state legislatures have been working to reduce overcrowding in prisons. It has been a problem in numerous places across the country, and the states affected have had to pass legislation that would address and fix the overcrowding problem. Nebraska is one of those states. However, amidst the vast debate over the legality of the death penalty in Nebraska, other criminal justice legislation, such as that of prison reform, is not a topic discussed in every household or establishment. Prison reform, though, is an issue that needs to be fixed sooner rather than later.…
Since the mid-1970s, America’s correctional system has emphasized getting tough on crime. The focus of crime control policies has centered on theories including retribution, deterrence, and incapacitation. However, evidence fails to concisely prove the effectiveness of these theories, leading many to reconsider the system’s approach to reducing recidivism. Evidence-based Corrections Evidence-based corrections are correctional policies, principles, interventions and treatments that are implemented because of their success during rigorous empirical testing, revealing that these techniques are likely to be effective in reducing recidivism (Cullen & Jonson, 2017).…
Pressing for Prison Reform The prison system is just as corrupt as the prisoners inside them. We live in a world where it is deemed acceptable to punish a criminal by taking away their humanity, and only release them when they find it themselves. We must reform the flawed prison system; only then can we correct the criminal way of life. Today, it is not uncommon to hear intrusive and abhorrent events that happen behind bars, including excessive violence, sexual harassment, health violations, and misconduct of legal power.…
There are numerous practices that are used in the criminal justice system. Professionals need to determine which theoretical approaches works best to help the system. Searching empirical studies and then utilizing that information can help determine the best theoretical practices. Correctional facilities should use different practices for restorative justice, crime prevention, and corrections to improve our criminal justice system. Defining different theoretical approaches can also improve rehabilitative services in correctional facilities.…
