Nurses should base their practice on the best available evidence (Nursing and midwifery council 2010). Evidence based practice is defined as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients” Sackett et al. (1996). The aim of Evidence based nursing is to deliver high quality care by critically evaluating evidence and apply this to practice, as professionals must demonstrate effective integration of evidence into their clinical decision making Department of Health (DoH) 1997,2000). It involves the nurse making conscious judgements about available evidence (Dale 2005).
The NHS Outcomes Framework 2015-2016 sets out the outcomes and corresponding indicators that will be used to hold the NHS Commissioning Board to account for improvements in health outcomes, as part of the government’s mandate to the NHS Commissioning Board (www.gov.uk, 2014). The NHS outcome framework indicators provide national level accountability for the outcomes the NHS delivers.
