At International Community Health Services: Holly Park Clinic, I primarily serve Asian-Pacific Islanders and encounter up to 57 different languages in a year. I frequently triage patients with acute concerns who are unable to be scheduled within 3 days. During and after each triage, I find myself asking an increasing number of questions, such as – "Have I integrated my objective data and my patient’s subjective information effectively? What interventions are culturally appropriate for this family? Am I utilizing an evidence-based approach? How can I develop a program to address this patient’s needs?” These questions are what first propelled me to consider pursuing a clinical doctorate in advanced practice nursing.
In 2012 the Census Bureau predicted that by 2043 there would be no racial and ethnic majority in the United States based on the current population trend.1 My experience working with patients and coworkers from multiple ethnic backgrounds speaking innumerable languages and dialects as showed how a growing diaspora can increase the level of complexity and confusion that makes understanding and agreement difficult to reach when trying to create a patient care plan. It would enable me to accurately assess research and data sources to ensure I provide safe, evidence-based, direct care and utilize data to develop health policies and implement system interventions that are appropriate for the population the interventions are intended to impact. UW’s DNP program trains its students to examine research information at the forefront of their academic journey.
