Evidence Based Evaluation and Planning: Level Two Discussion

1. The Importance of Meeting Outcomes
School librarians need to demonstrate the contributions of the school library program in contributing towards student learning at their school. Callison (2007) describes the difference between inputs, outputs, and outcomes and their importance in evaluating student learning and the contribution of the school library program to the school (p.43). School librarians need to focus on outcome- based evaluation to determine if the program has met specific goals. Inputs and outputs are components of outcome-based evaluation. Katherine P. Bates, McClure, and Spinks (2010) suggest that school librarians should collect both direct and indirect evidence of how school librarians contribute towards student learning (p.24) Indirect data proves that school librarians are engaged in established practices for school librarians across the nation. Furthermore, comparison of indirect data shows the strengths and weakness of a school library program. However, collecting direct data will provide school librarians with a firsthand account of their contributions towards student learning as well as provide them with an assessment tool. Hilary C. (2018) suggests that Bates, McClure and Spinks’s specific evidence-based practice demonstrates both strengths and weakness. Johnson (2001) also argues that assessment of a school library program can leads to improving the school library program (p. 14). Applying recognized standards and building goals allows for a school librarian to create the most effective assessment tool for their specific school library program. Julie T’s (2018) perspective on Johnson’s article highlights how the evaluation of a school library program is strengthened if the program’s evaluation is connected to the school librarian’s professional evaluation.
