Being that I work in as an oncology I have seen first hand effects that cancer diagnosis and treatment can impact a patients emotions and well-being. I have seen patients show signs of major depressive disorder (MDD) as a result. I also found that some of these patients who suffer from depression might not be properly screened for signs of distress. Furthermore, patients begin to give up the battle to fight. They begin to regress from doing the things they once loved, or do not make an effort to be compliant with their treatment. PHQ-9 Health Questionnaires is one screening tools used to see which patients in the oncology population are at high risk or are battling depression. The screening tool has nine categories in which there are four selections with a number attached to them (i.e. 0 not at all to 3= every day) attached to them. Then the numbers are added up and the sum of the score gives an indication of how severe the depression is. The range sum score is form 0-27.
