The purpose of the assessment aligns with the emphasis of the year 7 Science curriculum on inquiry-based teaching and learning. The assessment outcome is the preparation of a clear and concise argument about whether resources should be used more sustainably by referring to and describing scientific evidence to justify claims.
Hereby the curriculum strands Science Understanding and Science Inquiry Skills, as well as and the cross-curriculum priority sustainability are addressed. Based around the covered unit work of the Earth and Space Science content descriptor ACSSU116, the assessment covers the exploration of ways in which humans use and impact on resources from the earth, including sustainable alternatives. The assessment implements the science inquiry sequence of questioning, investigating, analysing, evaluating and communicating (ACSIS124-133). With sustainability being the main issue of the argumentative task, students consider the importance of protecting environments and creating a more ecologically and socially just world (SCSA, 2016a).

Meeting the curriculum achievement standard is ensured as the assessment focusses on the ability to communicate developed scientific understanding of the earth’s resources in order to create an informed, evidence-based argument about the future application of

Literacy is developed by exploring, analysing and communicating information and constructing evidence-based arguments. Analysing data and graphs enhances numeracy. The use of an online presentation tool enables students to communicate their understandings by applying ICT skills effectively and appropriately.
