Everyone Should Be Allowed In High School

Decent Essays
As a team captain of my high school’s cross country and track teams, I make an extra effort to reach out to my underclassmen to make them feel welcome and supported. I know in my first year of running in high school, it was hard to feel welcome in a sport when everyone was literally running away from you. Luckily, I grew faster and made many amazing friends, but I believe everyone should be included in the team dynamic, even if they are not a top runner or an extrovert. New people on their first day are usually timid and wide-eyed. I have found that it only takes asking their name and saying something somewhat funny for people to loosen up. It is super rewarding to see their closed-in postures relax and the fear disappear, especially since

I believe Black Boy should be taught in high schools in 2016 because it teaches to students the grueling way Black people were treated in the Jim Crow South and how to persevere no matter the circumstances. In the 1880’s Jim Crow laws were put into place to enhance racial segregation throughout the South. The laws took away any benefits that were given to African Americans and aimed to segregate black and white people in society. In Wright’s Story, these profound laws made life hard for Richard because he was only offered the lowliest of jobs and education. After Richard graduated from his all-black public school, he wanted to work but was only to be met by low paying jobs and racist whites.…

It teaches good life lessons that can be used later on in life. Others say it is too dangerous and has too many unknown long-term effects. I believe that football should be allowed in high school.…

The Right to Ban Students This world is unfair. Nobody promised that life would be fair to everybody. In fact, discrimination still runs rampant throughout today’s society. Even though Congress has passed several laws banning discrimination, those laws do not put an end to all types of discrimination.…

“I was hit helmet-to-helmet from the side of my face and I kind of stumbled over, and after that my ears started ringing and my eyes kind of blacked out a little bit,” (Calkins). Mack Woodfox, a high school varsity football player, missed weeks of school and practice due to a concussion caused by player-to-player contact. His injury accounts for the 300,000 concussions that young athletes suffer each year, according to a survey by Nationwide Children’s Hospital. After heavy publicity over such injuries and financial costs related to high school football programs, the school board should not continue to allow football in our local high schools because of the high prevalence in…

A topic often discussed with students at school is whether or not drug-sniffing dogs should be allowed to search through our school. Some arguments against allowing them is their invasion of privacy, disruption of class, and how they are ineffective. I personally believe the dogs should be allowed within the school and are great on helping the students and staff stay safe. The first complaint I’ve heard about the dogs is how they are an invasion of privacy.…

Every single American citizen has rights. Whether it is going to whatever school is closest to home, the right to vote, or even being able to marry whoever you choose: none of these rights should be restricted. In the past, African Americans’ and other immigrants’ human rights have been restricted. With the help of many rights activists and government involvement, these rights have been granted.…

Approximately 65,000 undocumented students graduate from U.S. high schools each year. The controversial topic emerged of whether or not children of illegal immigrants should be allowed to receive an education. Obama passed the DREAM Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which allowed undocumented youths to work and study in the United States for a certain number of years. In 2017, Trump declared he would end this program. Restricting a child’s education is unconstitutional.…

Imagine being born into a family with green eyes and everyone related to you has brown eyes. You might feel different, not understood, or even alone at some points. If you would feel that way, then how do you think children born into the LGBT community feel after realizing their sexuality is a unique one? As parents, first time or not, you all need to grasp the painstaking reality of who your child is interested in. Parents should accept their children no matter what their sexual orientation because this problem could cause permanent "damages", child abandonment and worst of all, the child may go through a suicidal stage.…

In light of the new state mandated desegregation of schools, one local high school is overcoming amazing obstacles. At the beginning of the school year parents and students rioted over the new desegregated school, T.C. William’s High. Despite this rioting and racism issues the football team has managed to shine, bringing the whole school along with the community together. The team themselves had issues with a new black head coach Coach Boone. T.C. William’s Titans was thought to me the underdog among football at the beginning of the school year and now is the team to beat.…

Furthermore, there are many cases in U.S. history that also support the thesis that censorship should not be allowed in schools or school environments. In the West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette a judge declares it's not right to “ prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion.” This prefaces that just because a school administration does does not agree with the ideas or beliefs expressed in any school or library material they are not allowed to, legally, to remove it from the curriculum or library. This provides support for the thesis because it shows an example where the censorship of material in schools was deemed wrong. Another case that can be used is the case of Board of Education,…

The first amendment to the Constitution is dear to Americans. After all, it spells out the most important freedoms available to citizens of the United States of America. These freedoms, however, seem to be getting too restricted in public schools. The Constitution states that “it guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely” (“First Amendment”). Also, the landmark Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines ruled that “students do not ‘shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate’”…

It is no foreign concept that one begins to seek out his or her place in the world when they begin to mature. During this process, their responsibility and independence progresses. However, multiples are faced with an irregularly harder challenge. Being a triplet myself, people often tell me they would like to be a triplet because they think it is so cool, but they are unaware of the underlying problems. Trying to identify my own interests, while never being thought of or referred to as an individual, is daunting.…

One instance that I never thought about in schools was the parking/bus rides. When I was a student in school the athletes got their parking passes first. I didn't realize this at the time, but not everyone is privileged with being athletic. Playing on a team is expensive. There are many fees, not to mention that there is then no one to take you home if you miss your bus.…

Kansas State University is a gorgeous campus that is always up kept and pleasing to the eye. However, almost twice a week my fellow K-state students and I come in to very close range of a large gas lawnmower. During what I like to consider “rush hours” of students between the hours of 8am-5pm it is not uncommon to see the mowers out on the quad or another section of the campus. Personally, I suffer from severe seasonal allergies brought on by things such as pollen and grass.…

Is getting pregnant a sin? Teen pregnancy is inevitable, therefore teenagers who get pregnant in high school should not be withheld of an education. Being given the privilege of staying in school gives them a chance to get a good career, teaches them the responsibility, and keeps them from being isolated and doing things that could potentially be harmful to them and the baby. Allowing pregnant teens to continue on until they finish high school, gives them the opportunity to get into a career that will enable them to provide for their child. First, granting pregnant teenage girls the privilege of being able to stay in school, gives them a chance to graduate and get their diploma.…
