Nieve is the main character in the novel, Everyone Leaves by Wendy Guerra. Nieve is a seven year old girl, who lives a double life. Nieve is always in the middle of a situation about her parents. She also has a stepfather named Fausto, around in the middle of the novel he leaves Cuba in order to get a better job position. Nieve lives in Cuba, but throughout pages 36-37 Nieve has not ate. Her father has put hands on her before, she is tired of all the bad times with him. In Everyone Leaves, Wendy Guerra reveals, “ I went to the gym and I hit myself over and over against the bars. I threw myself from the water towers and scraped my knees. I bled from one of the bruises on my forehead like never before” (72). This quote shows how Nieve is tired of being with her father. He is no good for his own daughter as well he does not show her anything good. The father is an alcoholic and never feeds the poor child. That is why Nieve went to the gym and threw herself around because she has a better lifestyle with her mother than father. It may not have been the right choice what Nieve did, but she was not happy with her father. In the novel Everyone Leaves, Wendy Guerra states, “ I don’t understand why Osvaldo and my father hate the Diary. History repeats itself to remind me that I’ve never been a master of my own fate” (195).
