In part of the text Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathon Edwards makes the observation that anyone who has not been a born again Puritan Christian will burn for all eternity in the pit known as Hell. To some, it is a dreaded, feared place, but to others it is fictional and incites no fear. This sermon grew in popularity and led the means for personal reformation in Puritans of that era.…

The Catholic Church has delineated various pious and sinful actions that humans are capable of; it would logically follow that in Hell, these sins would be punished in respectfully distinct manners. However, how would one qualify which sin is the most egregious, and how would one decide which punishment would fit the crime? In The Inferno, Dante seeks to answer these questions in a grand categorization of religious sins, beginning with those of lack of baptism and ending with those of treachery.…

A question asked about The Seventh Man is whether or not the narrator should forgive himself for not being able to save his beloved childhood friend K. However, this remains clear that forgiveness toward himself is in the best opinion of the narrator. Forgiveness of one’s self-contributes to “full moral repair” and is a “[duty] to self (157, Nancy Sherman).” In the story, The Seventh Man, the narrator (also known as the seventh man) feels a great deal of survivor guilt associated with the fact that he had not been able to save his friend K. from a massive wave that ultimately killed him.…

Actions committed within the world always have an impact upon life, no matter how seemingly extraordinary or insignificant. The decision to perform these actions is determined by the conscience, the overseer of what is right and wrong, within the mind. Everyday actions are performed by mankind and are interpreted as either righteous or heinous, more often than not falling towards the latter. Mankind is born with an inherent inclination towards this wrongdoing and sin. Sinful actions made every day in society constitute human nature and despite a lack of dependency for primal impulse, it inevitably holds control.…

The exiles of both men lead them to separate from Christ. In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” the Misfit cannot reconcile a world that would remove him so thoroughly and without remorse with one in which Christ’s teachings are true, and has thus removed himself from both. When speaking with the Grandmother, he says, “Jesus shown everything off balance. It was the same with him as with me except He hadn’t committed any crime and they could prove I had committed one because they had the papers on me” (O’Connor, “A Good Man” 12). He understands himself to be similar to Christ, but where the people accepted Christ, they rejected him.…

Variations on this question are so common. I often hear from wives who desperately want to understand just what in the world their husband was thinking while he was cheating on them. I often hear comments like "I want to know if he was thinking about me at all when he was with her. Because if he was thinking about me, how could he go through with cheating? I'm not sure if it's worse if he was thinking about me or if I wasn't on his mind at all."…
