In the next passage Walker, Alice. Everyday Use , a Mother, and her two daughters Dee and Maggie struggle through everyday life being poor and not having everything in hand. Their old house was burned down to the ground while the youngest daughter was still in the house. Maggie was burned badly, “her hair smoking and her dress falling off her in little black papery flakes. Her eyes seemed stretched open, blazed open by the flames reflected in them.” While the house was on fire, Dee stand off under the sweetgum tree she dug gum out of. Dee just watched as the house burn down in flames as if she was happy, because Dee did hate that house.
