“Everyday use” by Alice walker is a story of a family from the south the narrator is the mother who has two daughters who are opposing forces. In Amy Tan “Two kinds” is a tale of a girl named Jing mei who looks back in to personal memories of inner conflict that helped change into a more stronger character. The characters who draw the most sympathy is Maggie and the Jing-mei. Maggie has earned the sympathy of the audience through the use of diction. For instance, Walker characterizes Maggie as a “lame animal, perhaps a dog run over by a careless person rich enough to own a car, sidle up to someone who is ignorant enough to be kind to him?”(337).The image strikes the audience with sorrow and pain when compared to a low leveled animal.
