With mentorship and support, it is possible to overcome the negative impacts of bullies. The protagonist, Lucky Linderman, is emotionally and physically bullied by Nader which affects his life heavily. For instance, Nader intentionally pees on Lucky’s feet in the washroom which makes Lucky cry. Also, Nader scrapes Lucky against concrete and says, “See what happens when you fuck with me, Linderman?” (King 51). This influences Lucky to prevent himself from being emotionally harmed by Nader’s physical bullying. As a result, Lucky becomes less emotionally vulnerable to Nader. Next, Lucky’s uncle helps Lucky develop the strength to combat Nader. His uncle says, “Tomorrow I’m getting you on that bench, man. In two weeks, you’ll be beefed up and ready to kick that kid’s ass!” (King 69). With a couple weeks of training, Lucky is encouraged to physically fight Nader. Although Lucky does not believe it is humane to beat someone up, Lucky develops the courage to confront Nader at the end of the novel which successfully stops Nader from bullying him. Lastly, Lucky’s friends help him keep his mind off the bully and become optimistic. Lucky’s close friend, Ginny, teaches Lucky how to rebel. Ginny rebels against her parents by shaving her head and smoking which convinces Lucky to go against his bully. Moreover, Ginny supports Lucky when he feels like he is not valued. When Ginny kisses Lucky, he smiles nonstop and forgets about his bully because he feels loved.
