A personal journey is varied by the types of obstacles and struggles a person must face while living their own particular adventure. In the books, Every Day by David Lethian and Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the main characters both struggle with their identities and trying to help people understand them. The character A (referred to as him) in Every Day has faced the difficulty of never living the same life for more than one day. The character Auggie in Wonder is faced with mandibulofacial dysostosis which is a medical term for a rare facial deformity. The characters A and Auggie both have trouble with their identities and it is hard for people to understand what they are dealing with. A is dealing with the trouble of holding onto someone who he should’ve forgotten. Similarly, Auggie is struggling with the trouble not to holding onto the idea of homeschool. Both of these characters are trying to learn to let go of the past and try to reach toward the future. While these characters are learning how to survive new situations they both face antagonistic characters that make their personal journeys difficult. A deals with Nathan and Reverend Poole after A lived Nathan’s life for a day and Nathan set his mind on finding who A was and decided to comply with Reverend Poole. Auggie has to live with a character named Julian, though both of them never truly grasp the source of their hatred. A moment when Auggie says, “I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.”, shows that Auggie believes that every person no matter how “normal” or strange should get applause. Similarly, A states that “If there's one thing I've learned, it's this: We all want everything to be okay. We don't even wish so much for fantastic or marvelous or outstanding.
