Even in an Electronic Era, Reading and Writing Lives On
David Crystal’s writings describe the implications on reading and writing from new texting technologies. Crystal’s main points discuss the new texting language, the outcome of texting on literacy, and the innovative possibilities of texting on our language. Dennis Baron’s writing has us think about writing with all of the new innovation and think to ourselves should everybody write or should it be for an elite group only. With new spellings and abbreviations showing up more and more commonly as a result of texting, people don’t realize that these forms of language have been around for a much longer than texting has been around. Crystal spends a lot of time discussing that people feel that texting is altering our language with things like texting abbreviations and new word spellings. I know that I can tell the difference between the writings from a person who has a well thought out paper and a paper that has no thought or effort behind it. I don’t believe that writing is turning out to be less important in the electronic age. I think, that the importance of writing has developed with the electronic age. Baron is unquestionably right when he says that online writers have no problem coming up with a topic to write about or finding somebody to read their work. Overall, I found that Baron’s argument made more sense to me and I absolutely agree with his idea that if there is more writing out there, the chances that someone will find something they like is higher so the more people that write, the better. I believe that we should be questioning how our common language will go on to change and progress and what new ways of writing will be
