To assure that the writing workshop is effective in assisting students as they develop their writing skills, the writing workshop should follow a predictable structure in an environment conducive to brainstorming and composing. As a facilitator of the workshop, teachers should determine the sequence of a workshop, explicitly teach components, and have students practice the system. Additionally, teachers should set clear expectations and model each component of the workshop before implementing a full writer’s workshop in their classroom. The key is to maximize time during the writer’s workshop so that creativity is not stifled. By planning purposefully, students will be afforded ample time to write while teachers can maximize the opportunity to confer with students effectively.
In a classroom this may begin initially as instructors explicitly teach routines and procedures. Before students arrive “writer’s workshop” days/times should be specified and posted. When the time for writer’s workshop approaches, teachers should make accessible all tools necessary for writing. All of these factors should be in place to allow for a smooth transition and to eliminate any confusion or anxiety. Atwell suggests the following structure:
1. Mini Lesson
2. Independent Writing
a. Choice
b. Workmanlike Atmosphere
3. Teacher Conferences
4. Peer Conferences
