Method
Participants
For this study, a sample of the general population would be used. Ideally, the number of participants for the initial study would be a sample of 300 adult respondents from various age groups of adulthood. Within these 300 participants, there will be an equal distribution of gender (150 male participants and 150 female participants). Specifically, this study would target participants between the ages of 18 and 50 year of age so that it includes participants from the young adult age group, emerging adult age group, and some participants from the middle adulthood age group. Using this information, it can be concluded that 2 correlates with “uncharacteristic of me,” 3 correlates to “neither characteristic nor uncharacteristic of me,” and 4 correlates to “characteristic of me.” Each of the four sections of items provides insight into four aggression factors (physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, and hostility) that will eventually be used to determine one’s propensity for aggression and what type of behaviors they manifest as. Some examples of items in section 1 include statements such as “I get into fights a little more than the average person” and “I have become so mad that I have broken something.” In section two, there are statements such as “I tell my friends openly when I disagree with them” and “I can’t help getting into arguments when people disagree with me.” Section two includes statements like “I am an even-tempered person” and “I flare up quickly but get over it quickly.” Finally, in section four, there are items such as “I am suspicious of overly friendly strangers” and “I wonder why sometimes I feel so bitter about things.” Responses are then added up and totaled at the end of each section; however, there are a few items noted with an asterisk in which the Likert …show more content…
The higher the number of “yes” responses, the higher the propensity for aggression and aggressive behavior for that particular respondent. For “witnessed” responses, higher number of those indicated that the respondent has a higher level of attraction and exposure to aggression and aggressive behavior. In other words, while the respondent may not exhibit or participate in aggressive behavior themselves, they have a tendency to be around people who have higher levels of aggression or to find themselves in environments that involve a higher frequency of aggressive behavior. Male and female respondents can be expected to have equal levels of exposure to aggression and aggressive behaviors. After collecting data and coding it appropriately, the responses and results for each gender will be synthesized and evaluated. Results for the Appetitive Aggression Scale will show that male and female respondents will show equal levels of exhibiting aggressive
