Evacuation Plan Essay

Evacuation procedures and the amount of time we have to evacuate will depend on the crisis. If the disaster can be monitored such as a hurricane, we may have more time to evacuate. However, some disasters such as an earthquake may occur with no warnings. If the evacuation is immediate and our family is not already together, I will call my wife and the children to meet at our predestinated location and follow our family emergency plan described above. Our evacuation plan will include multiple routes and modes of transportation. A natural disaster may damage the airport or destroy a bridge on an escape route. We will take cover under a table or a desk for protection against falling objects. We will stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to move outside. If we are outside during the earthquake, we will stay outside and move away from buildings, utility wires, or anything that could fall on us. Our primary goal during an earthquake is to move as little as possible to avoid personal injury. After the earthquake, we will prepare for aftershocks and/or tsunamis. If there is a tsunami warning, we would move away from the coastline and get to higher grounds. The movie showed the children going to the mountain for shelter. If this is not an option, we will go as high or far inland as possible. We would want to avoid the water or get out of the water at all cost. If we are caught in the tsunami, each person will try to grab onto a debris or something solid to prevent being carried away by the current. Fighting against the current might lead to drowning. If there are minor injuries, such as small cuts or scrapes, those can be treated with the first aid kit. However, serious injuries such as broken bones or lacerations will need to be treated at the hospital. If the disaster was an earthquake, after it has passed, we will continue to be vigilant for an aftershock. In addition, damaged structures can collapse after the shaking has stopped. If the disaster was due to a tsunami, we will stay away from debris in the water, since it may pose a safety hazard. Since a tsunami is a series of waves, the danger might not be over after just one wave. Our family will continue to monitor the news and avoid flooded and damaged areas. If we haven’t already, we will go to the designated shelter. We will only return to the hotel after local officials declared that it is safe.
