High School Leukemia Reflection

Improved Essays
This semester I was assigned to Easthaven Elementary School and for my end of course project I had my class make get-well cards for Leukemia patients. This is very different from my original proposed project idea, but I felt this one made a much bigger impact on everyone involved. I work on an Acute Leukemia floor in the James Cancer Hospital and the kids were raising money to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. Once the kids knew I worked on a leukemia floor, they asked me all kinds of questions about my job, the patients etc. It was really cool to teach people about our patient population and how the money people donate really does help the patients. According to an article written by Michael Grever, MD and John C. Byrd, MD from the …show more content…
When I found out I was assigned to the Columbus City School district I knew there would be issues of poverty, I just didn’t know how bad. I’ve mentioned several times that these kids don’t have their own individual supplies; they all share pretty much everything. The kids don’t have their own textbooks, they share those as well; if they have a homework assignment from the book, the teacher will make a copy and give it to each student. My CP paid for a lot of her classroom supplies with her own money and she constantly buys pencils, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, scissors, paper etc. When the students made the cards for the Leukemia patients, she provided all of that paper as well as the supplies used to decorate and color them. It’s hard to plan things like this to do because if the school doesn’t have the supplies, the teacher had to buy them with her own money and that becomes really expensive; in turn, this also places a burden on the teacher. My CP wants her students to be able to do fun things, they just …show more content…
I had several people cry and they said it was just nice to know that there is someone out there who truly cares and wants them to get better; even if they’ve never met. This whole experience has reaffirmed my choice to become a teacher; whether I teach at a really fancy suburban school, or a really tiny poor urban school, I just want to have an impact. Every child; no matter their socioeconomic status, home life, neighborhood etc. deserves a great education and to know they have someone they can talk to and someone who cares about their future. I saw the look on our patient’s faces just from receiving a card from a little 10 and 11 year-old kids and truly realized how, no matter how old you are, you can have an impact on someone else’s

Kids across the nation are standing out and making a difference. Whether its just picking up around the community or starting a foundation people can make a difference. Many people think kids are just in the way and don’t ever actually make a difference in their community. Blare Gooch started with a teddy bear, Alex Scott started with a cup of lemonade, and Zach Hunter started with a few pennies around his house. The Toberman Neighborhood Center project was fun and an amazing experience. Being a photographer I found while completing some parts made me feel to shy to ask others for help. My professor encouraged me to “get out of my comfort zone” and start asking them myself if they allowed me to take photos of them for the project, which generally is quite significant. At first I did not have any courage to ask them I simply thought I was interrupting them and invading their personal space The interactions with the organization showed me what goodness really does in society and they love to change the world and the lives of others in a subtle way.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

When I began my search for my Silver Award project, my first though turned to children and kids my age, because who better to help than people my age and in my community, and I felt that the group of people the project was intended for would be a great match. I brain stormed with my troop and finally decided on a lending library for the Frisco Summer Lunch Program. My first step was to meet the coordinators of the lunch program and discuss my ideas. After this, my group and I began to gather supplies and set a final date to begin our projects. I specifically was in charge of signage and collecting the vast majority of 2000 books after coordination 2 book drives.…

Driving through Austin, it is almost commonplace to see people standing on the side of the street requesting food and items to get them through their day. These are the people we see with dirty clothes, a backpack, and cardboard signs requesting help. It is rather depressing to see so many desperate people wandering our city without places to call home. I thought I knew how hard their lives were. However, I had never had a conversation with them.…

In manifold years, the African American community has suffered harshly from institutional racism. As Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from their identity. Torture was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans that they cannot even love their own skin color. Lack of opportunities such as educationally, economically, and politically have been the main factors that our community lacks for "success” due from oppression. Philanthropy is a way for our Black Leaders to restore the lack of resources such as meals, housing, educational opportunities, and guidance in the communities.…

Be it the birth of Christ or the victory of the revolution against the Greek-Syrian, many families come together to share during the holiday seasons. This among other valuable lessons, I learned working by the side of Lupita and a number of genuine souls. At the beginning of my eight grade year Mrs. Duarte, Lupita’s mom, made an announcement during youth group.…

As an only child growing up in a middle class family, I learned the value of helping others through my parents. My hard working parents were brought up in Bangladesh, a third-world country in South Asia with devastating poverty. Moreover, my parents are very strict and disciplining individuals; they both loved to help others regardless of their physical endurance, mental health, or economic stability. As role models, they reared me in the belief that my goals in life should include lending a helping hand to others. Furthermore, my empathy for others has encouraged me to aid those in need.…
