henomenon of concern that this writer is choosing to write about is a therapeutic environment for the psychiatric patient that are boarding in the emergency room waiting for an inpatient psychiatric bed to become available. Psychiatric boarding of patient’s in the emergency room need to be in a therapeutic environment to promote healing and recovery. With the increase need for mental health inpatient beds, the patients are having to board in the emergency room and these patients need a therapeutic environment to start the healing and recovery process. This writer works in an emergency room unfortunately, far too often the emergency room nurses including the writer see patients that are spending days in the emergency room waiting for an inpatient bed to become available. By the patient having a therapeutic environment while waiting for inpatient bed to become available these patients are able to start the healing and recovery process and might even be able to be discharged home from the emergency room and have outpatient follow up.
Purpose of the Concept Analysis This writer has a personal interest in the topic of psychiatric patient boarding in the emergency room not having a therapeutic environment because this writer works in an emergency room and sees it every day. Sometimes the psychiatric patients are in the emergency room for days waiting for an inpatient bed.
