Reflection Of Technology In Play In The Classroom

I have visited my cooperating teacher’s classroom twice thus far, and both visits have been to the second half of the balanced literacy unit, where the interactive read aloud, group and student conferencing takes place. The literacy schedule is split in two with a special in between classes. Due in part to this fact, I have not yet had the opportunity to see the first part of the language arts class and to observe all the technologies which may be in place to assist students. I have planned to see this part of the curriculum in the coming weeks and will have an opportunity to reflect on the technologies used at that time. Thus far, I have seen two different technologies in play in the classroom. On both my visits, the students had previously listened to the teacher read the book they are studying. She verbally reviewed the story in brief and reminded the students what the focus of the lesson was. The teacher …show more content…
In this particular classroom, there were enough i-pads for the majority of the class, and students were also permitted to bring in their own technologies, either i-pad minis, Nook or Kindle e-readers. During independent reading time, some students chose to read electronically. The books the students were reading were levelled readers from a program the teacher was using called Raz-Kids. The program was interactive and had end of reading quizzes, modeled read aloud sections to aid students with fluency and the ability for the teacher to create a running record assessment. The teacher did acknowledge that while the students enjoyed using the program, the text material was not always of the best quality, a point that needs to be considered seriously before allowing a program such as this. This particular teacher, however, felt that as a supplement to quality texts, it was of value, especially to get the boys in her classroom
